And given that the week leading up to the SuperBowl is the largest/busiest week for human trafficking, I wanted to shed some light on this horrendous blight on our society.
Some facts/stats related to human trafficking/sex-slavery:
-human trafficking generates $9.5 billion yearly in the united states. (united nations)
-approximately 300,000 children are at risk of being prostituted in the united states. (u.s. department of justice)
-the average age of entry into prostitution for a child victim in the united states is 13-14 years old. (u.s. department of justice)
-the average victim may be forced to "engage" up to 20-48 times a day. (polaris project)
-one in three teens on the street will be lured toward prostitution within 48 hours of leaving home. (national runaway hotline)
-other facts can be found at fbi/human trafficking and the coveringhouse.
For the week leading up to the SuperBowl, two organizations, RedLight Rebellion (http://redlightrebellion.com/ ) and F.R.E.E. International (http://freeinternational.org/superbowl-effect/ ) are actively intervening on this issue.
They are joining as non-profits along with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to directly combat trafficking.
They assist those law enforcement agencies by organizing citywide events such as multi-organization outreaches, hotel trainings, school prevention assemblies for the sole purpose of rescuing victims and preventing new ones, and searching directly by walking those streets and frequenting places for "missing kids".
Additionally, Cindy McCain co-chaired a task force which made recommendations to legislatures toughening laws against traffickers, raised awareness by increase public education, and worked to stop sex trafficking from happening ( Cindy McCain ).
this coalition along with some local west-side houses of worship/churches have already planned a jam-packed week of outreach that will literally reach tens of thousands with awareness.
they are asking for ~ 150 adult volunteers to join the rebellion against injustice in the following areas:
•"cooking meals–so many important things happen the week before the super bowl, most of the volunteers have little time to prepare meals. other volunteers willing to make snacks or simple meals is one of the biggest helps! this will take place at our command center.
•housing–not only will we work with local volunteers, but free is bringing a team of 30 people from out of state. providing a place to crash for a few hours every day helps renew energy and not break the bank on hotel costs.
•hospitality outreach–volunteer to provide information on missing, and possibly exploited children, to hotels and other businesses with high traffic during large community events.
•street outreach–pass out information on missing, and possibly exploited children to those frequenting pre-game festivities. if identified, a child’s life could be saved.
•assembly set-up and tear-down–travel to each school with us to set up all the equipment needed for our high impact, multi media, speaker driven school assembly program.
•community rally set-up and tear-down–help spread the word across our community. our awareness measures extend into the evening with events for parents and community members to receive information about sex trafficking."
