At about the 6:30 mark left in the first quarter and North leading 4-3 a North player missed a free throw which was rebounded by Central. During the next 90 seconds Central scored two baskets and got a second foul on North's Center and had a 7-4 lead. At that point the officials were summoned to the scorer's table and a long discussion ensued. The announcer then said there was a "correctable error" because North should have been shooting two free throws at the 6:30 mark; something no player or official caught and I honestly don't recall if the shooter shot two.
What followed was something I've never seen in a basketball game. They took away Central's four points and the second foul on North's center and they restarted the game with the second free throw, which was missed and rebounded just as the first had been. Unbelievably, if all the action durng the 90 seconds never occurred, the clock was now at the 5:00 minute mark, they didn't add time back on so in effect 90 seconds of game time was lost. Central retook the lead and hung tough in the first half but through turnovers and two costly and controversial technical fouls couldn't hang on the second half.
The North center, who is quite a physical presence and blocked several shots, actually fouled out at the 7:00 minute mark of the fourth quarter, essentially his sixth foul.
Has anyone ever heard of a similar incident? I sure hope these refs aren't in the playoffs and I hope Central sends a report the AIA. I don't have horse in the race but like watching Bejarano of North and Selmon of Central so this was a perfect game for me. The gym was packed.
