I don't think it will be close at all. Thatcher has been playing shorthanded for the past 4 games. RB Kartchner did't play in the Benson game and Soph. RB Motes has been out since the 3rd qtr of the Benson game. Thatcher still beat Benson and Round Valley soundly shorthanded on their fields. They are all 100% now and are ready to go. I forgot to mention the #4 ranked in receiving TE in the country, 6'6" Drage and #2 in passing in AZ Div V. QB Motes. I'm with Metro..I will take Thatcher as a contender to win it all. Its to bad that Tempe Prep jumped everyone and pushed Thatcher into Morenci's bracket. I was looking forward to two public schools being in the state championship in a long time in this division. Maybe it can still happen with St. Johns?
Lots of assumptions to get to those second round Matchups.
First off SJ hasn't played anyone but powderpuffs for 4 straight weeks---PC might just smack them in the mouth, and build a big enough lead that when SJ realizes they are in a game it is too late. It will take at least a QTR and maybe a half for SJ to figure it out, i've seen it time and again. SJ has a group of kids that might just role over if PC smacks them in the mouth early.
YC/SC--I agree these two will meet and either team is capable of running the table.
Thatcher, beating a team like Benson twice is always a tall order but I think Thatcher wins a squeaker. Tempe Prep/RV, this one is interesting and I think it hinges entirely on whether or not RVs QB is back from injury and is somewhat healthy. If he is, this should be the upset pick--If he is not Tempe Prep wins a low scoring contest.
I haven't seen ALA but I have seen Williams. If ALA can control the line of scrimmage, eat clock, and keep Williams QB off the field ALA will win. If they can't keep Williams QB off the field, Williams has a great chance. Morenci, I think they walk into the semi's unchallenged.
I didn't call the Johnies "mama's boys", but I did say they could roll over if PC smacks them in the mouth. I said that based on the reality of the last 10 years of SJ football. In that time period, I don't think I remember them winning a single game where they got down by a couple of scores. They don't come back, and they rarely, and I mean rarely win close games. They either win by a significant margin or they lose, plain and simple. I think that has to do with a # of different factors, that all can't be thrown on the kids. You usually are not good at situations that you don't face often. SJ, with the schedule they have had, usually blows teams out, except for teams from the old 3a east, whom they generally lose to.
No problem Sprink...I wasn't tried to elude to the fact that you made any such comment...those were my words. I was being sarcastic because typically SJ plays very tough and physical.
I can't recall too many (if any) high school games where a team that was being dominated by a few touchdowns and then came back to win. It just doesn't happen often, especially in high school FB. However, remember the Payson/Blue Ridge final game at NAU a few years back where Payson came back at half from a good deficit and won. that was a game to witness.
At least maybe SJ will be ready for good opposition based upon having been tested with RV, SL, SF, and BR. There has to be value in that.
Haven't seen Morenci play this year but hear they have a fast QB and a few hosses that can play, especially the FB? Yep, agree that Morenci could do it this year.
The thing that they didn't have going for them was their weak schedule. No disrespect to the other teams, but clearly their two toughest apponents were Thatcher and RV. RV hung with them tight in the first half until they rolled over.
It will be interesting to see how Morenci responds when they come upon a tough defense. The Thatcher win/score was impressive though.
Metro...you are correct that none of the rurals have met up with the privates or charters yet except for the early scrimmage that SJ had with TP. The word I got was that SJ seemed to have the upper hand there.....but that was early and a scrimmage and most likely not a good guage. Sure TP has improved drastically since then...obviously since they proved themselves with NWC.
You bring up a great question though....I'm not sure NWC nor Yuma Catholic is the powerhouse they have been the past few years. I'll give NWC the benifit of doubt though and call their loss to TPA a "bad game".."big headed" ??
