It appears teams have been scrambling all week to schedule games as Rancho Solano and Arizona School for the Deaf and Blind were unable to field a squad and therefore had to cancel their season. A huge disappointment for the school and athletes I'm sure. Schools with those two teams on their schedules were left with a big decision: take the forfeit or see if they could schedule a replacement game. Eight teams were able to find opponents and this weekends games are as follows: Friday night - Bowie @ Phoenix Day School and Ray @ Valley Union. Saturday night - St. David @ Mayer and Glendale Prep @ Gilbert Christian. Should make for an interesting first week as neither of those teams were expecting to play a meaningful game until next week. Stay tuned to see if any of the other teams with Rancho and ASDB on their schedules are able to schedule a replacement game.
Where'd you get the info about Rancho Solano? They are still showing up in the schedule (ASDB, however, is not).
I noticed that too. My sources assure me Rancho will not field a team this year. Could be it's just not official as of yet. Maybe Rancho is appealing? From what I understand they are attempting to get the AIA to allow their foreign students to play. This will get their numbers where they would be able to field a team. Let me stress I have not confirmed this.
I heard Bowie/San Simon will have to cancel their season due to injuries as well? Can anyone confirm?
It looks that way. I noticed that Duncan has replaced Bowie for Friday nights game against Phoenix Day School for the Deaf. The AIA still shows games scheduled for Bowie so maybe it's not official yet either? But I do know when I looked at the schedules yesterday Bowie was scheduled to play PDSD this Friday night. Now Duncan is playing PDSD.
Trying to get the AIA to approve their foreign students playing football? Good luck with that one. From what I hear, "Slemmer's Rule" is pretty much the law of the land as far the AIA powers-that-be are concerned.
Duncan and Gilbert Christian are scheduled to face off on September 13 at Gilbert Christian High School as a replacement game for both teams. GC was originally scheduled to play Rancho Solano while Duncan was originally scheduled to play Bowie/San Simon. It's pretty confusing because according to the AIA website Bowie is scheduled to play Duncan September 12th yet Rancho is no longer showing as playing GC. What a weird start to the season with teams dropping out and Week Zero games being played. Not to mention all the errors on the Maxpreps and the AIA websites with scores! What's going on? With all that said The GC/Duncan game should be a good one!
Bowie / San Simon and Rancho Solano have officially been removed from the schedules. The unintended consequence is now Section 2 has only 4 teams, and remember that one of those teams is guaranteed a playoff spot. I would wager at this point, St. David's path to the playoffs just got a heck of a lot easier as they now have TWO weeks off between their last game (10/4 vs. Tohono O'Odham) and the first round of the playoffs - that's a huge plus if they need extra rest and getting some players healthy again.
Games have been rescheduled for replacements -
10/4 Valley Union @ Salome 10/11 PDSD @ Patagonia 10/18 AZ Charter @ Tohono O'Odham
I don't agree that St. David's path got easier. Losing games is bound to lower their power points and although they still may make playoffs as an automatic provided they beat Patagonia and Valley Union (and VU seems much improved), they may enter as a 12 seed due to playing fewer games, even if they happened to go in with zero, one, or two losses. I know SD has been scrambling to find games.
Remember a couple of years ago when Joe City entered playoffs as the fourth seed only because they dropped from one to four at the last week when Cibecue forfeited the game? They were undefeated but seeded below St. David who had a loss.
Plus, is it easier to have TWO weeks off before a playoff game? Last game could be 10/4 and then you don't play a game for almost a month? That's actually three weeks off. Additionally, TO is traditionally unreliable near the end of the season. What if they cancel to SD? Strange schedule year and hopefully AIA will not let these cancelling teams back in until they can demonstrate they can field teams. I don't know....
