Whoah there Tigertractor...What I saw was a tough, fast, highly motivated, and well coached Mogollon team. Despain was phenomenal and faster than any kid Bagdad has. Although, I think Bagdad has the greater speed collectively.
Bagdad should win this game if they can do 3 things. 1. Stop Despain. .2 Stop Despain. And the ever elusive number 3. Stop Despain. Now I'm not saying that he Despain is the whole team, but he is a force on the field and an obvious leader. I don't think Mogollon can stop Bagdad's Offense. Bagdad should be able to establish their ground game and wear Mogollon down. On Defense they need to stop Despain (did I already say that?)
Additionally, for all of those Mogollon fans cheering my family and I on as we left the stands saying things like: :You're Next!", and "Bagdad cant keep up with the Mogollon Boys," and my personal favorite " You wont be playing against girls next week Bagdad". To you i say this: you are great fans and parents who love their children enough to drive them all the way to Phoenix for a playoff game. You obviously have a great community that supports your team and coaches. You have a great group of boys that play will all their heart and soul. Bless you and Thank you. (You may also want to look into that thing y'all have going on with that extra long middle finger. Wouldn't want that thing to become infected, that's nasty stuff right there.)
Regardless of whether or not Bagdad wins or loses; know one thing, they will have played with Character, Brotherhood, Integrity, Blood, Sweat, Tears, Love for family, Respect For the Game, All In, Next Level, Confidence, all of which now resides in their guts boiling away, ready to be unleashed. (Ok I know that's more than one and I got a little carried away..
Its funny that Moggollon wasn't talking that kind of smack after the game last year when Bagdad beat them on their own field. I just hope we have a good clean game next Saturday. I have lived in Bagdad for 28 years and have watched a lot of football including the last time we went to the championship game when my oldest son played but this team is something special. We do not have one or two star players, we have a whole team of beasts. Chapo you are right on with your last paragraph and I can't wait for next Saturday nights game, I am so proud of every one of those boys. GO SULTANS!!!
As most here know I'm a Salome resident and a Frogs fan..I have friends who live in Baghdad and my son who is now a former Frog football player has made a few friends with some of the players on the Sultans football squad. He's looking forward to playing along side with the Sultan seniors in the Senior bowl.
My son and I are going to be rooting for Baghdad at the game next week.. Go Sultans!!!
Mogollon has produced some very good football teams over the years, coached by some very classy coaches. Unfortunately the same can not be said of their fans. I do not know if it is the "water" or the genetics, but the word class and Mogollon fans should not be used in the same sentence. Mogollon's football team will give it all they have. Good luck to Marty's boy, Zach's brother, the cousins, and all the rest of the Sultans. You are playing for all the Sultans of years gone by. I stand by my prediction that you will drink from the golden cup. I root from my heart, and predict with my brain.
I grew up on the mountain as well, where historically this type of behavior was never an issue. Those were different times, with different coaching, and less of a societal tolerance of it. I was a little taken abcack by it as well, but we just gave them folks our biggest smile and told them good game. Perspectively, I shouldn't throw all the Mogollon fans in the same boat. We were sitting on the far end of he stands and there were several small group doing the heckling as we walked by in front of them. Probably less then 10% of all the Mogollon fans.
Still enough to talk about and use as motivation to win. I know I know, it shouldn't take this type of motivation for good teams, but it can't hurt, especially when given so freely...;-)
As i watched the game via internet. I can not say I seen or heard the taunting. But what i will say is I observed a very good Sultan team play good team football. I will be watching the game via internet again this weekend. I also agree that small town fans will give it their all to players, coaches, and community due respect. I just hope that all players walk off the field as they walked on, with pride respect and much more sportsmanship.
Come on Tractor! You and I must have been watching different games. The least I will do is admit that we have differing opinions as fans of opposing teams. Of course our perspectives will be different. Also I don't want to get into a finger pointing match with you over sportsmanship or lack there of. You can think that I am on a high horse all you want, but if you have read my posts over the four years I have been on this site, you will notice that I can be Bagdad's biggest critic at times. I call it like I see it bud.
You sound like a bitter fan whose team got their a$$ handed to them on Saturday.
Spoken like a true Bagdad fan! Perspective IS a funny thing. I was on the sideline for that game and what tractor commented was right on. I hesitated on making any comments on this because I knew it would be viewed as sour grapes! Yes GC got beat but it doesn't change the truth. I did not witness any of what went on Saturday in last years Bagdad/GC game. After the game several law enforcement officers and fans with no dog in the race commented the exact same thing tractor said. What reason would they have to make those comments? And I for one am not bitter. It's just football. In any case congratulations on the victory and good luck Saturday.
It's sad how many critics come crawling out if the woodwork when a team is good. As I said, Bagdad isn't perfect, and I have pointed that out over the years. Also, like I said again- I don't want to get into a finger pointing match on this game.
Please go back and read my posts. My point was that Bagdad isn't just going to walk in and take the championship as Tractor mentioned. They are going to have to beat a very tough Mogollon team to earn a championship. I also staters what I thought Bagdad had to do to beat them. As a side note, and for my own amusement, I wrote about my experience with Mogollon fans.
It's funny how the only part some paid attention to was the latter.
Bagdad is an underdog, always has been and and always will be. They will rarely have the numbers that some of the other schools do. Heck they only have 130 students this year. They just so happen to have a good youth program, with parent involvement and support. This is why they have the football numbers they do.
I know it sucks to get your a$$ kicked by a bunch of dumb hillbilly miners, but come on don't try to take away from what they have accomplished. If you don't like it well then quit whining and get better
Sad you think of yourself as a dumb hillbilly miner. I personally have a great deal of respect for the miner and small town folk. And by the way Bagdad wasn't the underdog, amongst the majority of division six football fans. Only the underdog on paper according to the AIA. And for the record I'm not a critic of the player. Just find your comments towards some of the other teams unsportsmanlike.
Just so you know Chapo, I for one am envious of the numbers Bagdad has! To have 42 kids go out for football in a school of only 130 is admirable! And to be as good as they are, props. GC isn't there yet and it will take time. Basketball still reigns supreme at GC with a 5th state title on the horizon. But I am hopeful with this years success the numbers will start growing. If you go back and read posts after last year no one saw what GC accomplished this year coming. Not the crystal football, no one! But still not many will give GC their due. To many they are still a bunch of silver spoon privileged kids. Some maybe, but not many!
