You are kidding, right?!?
RR had 3 kids on the "AIA" All-Division 1st or 2nd team in 2012, and they were very good players...good enough to start somewhere at any school in D-5. That team went 6-5 and made the playoffs for the first time in 7 years, too. Other than that, when was the last time Sedona had All-State players?? A lot of people around here were surprised that the HC didn't leave after that banner year.
That same team also had a large make-up of Sophomore starters from the onset, and were starting FRESHMEN somewhere for most of the season out of NECESSITY.
Numbers are a HUGE problem there. According to MaxPreps, they only had THREE Seniors on their roster this year! 5 in 2012, 9 in 2011, and ONE in 2010. I heard, they only DRESSED 13 players TOTAL for their last game against Joy this past fall.
From what I know, they are going to return a lot of starters for next season (most will be Seniors...a "big" group for Sedona...ie. 10 or so), and expectations are high for 2014 (and high means win 7-8 games and make the playoffs). After that, they will STRUGGLE to be around .500 again.
Have you ever BEEN to Sedona?? Not exactly the best "football town" in Arizona...lots of crystals and vortexes though. Great scenery and expensive homes, but a country-club sports school. A LOT of QB want-to-be's but not many linemen. Great school for swimmers, but not so much football. And all of the concussion concerns will not make that any better.
Also, the school and district are losing enrollment. With their participation numbers for football, they should play 8-man.
And VERY few football players from Sedona end up at Mingus. I live in Cottonwood and have been around Mingus football since before Red Rock opened and there haven't been more than 8-9 kids go to Mingus for football in those 17 years. And the BEST of those (Layton Dickerson), moved from Tucson to Sedona before his Junior year, and picked Mingus, so not exactly a Sedona kid who left to play football at Mingus.
So you should really get your facts straight before saying Red Rock under-achieves.
I knew a guy who was an All State lineman from SRR. He wasn't a native to Sedona, or even Arizona but he was good enough to play in college for a while. He said they have good athletes and most just don't play football. I think one of the years he played they made the playoffs and lost to Seton. There's also some tough country kids from Cornville and out that direction who could go to SRR but go to Mingus instead.
It's not an easy place to win, but the right coach would be able to do it there. They should be a playoff team every year in Division V. Maybe not contending for state every year, but a solid 10-16 seed every season isn't out of the question.
