Summers approaching and the all star Game player selections are final. Anyone heard the details about this? Specifically how the teams are being picked and who to look out for? Should be a good one this year with a lot of physical play. Lots of close heart breaking games this year.
Players and coaches have been nominated, the players have until April 15th to get there information sent in. Once the players have their information in confirming the participants, the teams will be divided evenly. As of right now it will be played in Duncan!
I didn't see the game, but heard it was fantastic.
I heard that the MVP's were DeSpain from Mogollon and Merrell from Duncan. Very nice that Merrell was able to play some more football. Had he been healthy the entire year, I think Duncan would have gone deep in the playoffs.
I heard that on the final play of the game, Merrell tackled DeSpain to keep him from scoring and that the collision could be heard in Safford. Heh I also heard that Mesa Prep QB and WR(can't remember their names, sorry) played very well.
This game was reportedly much more enjoyable to watch than last year in Heber, which was a poorly distributed, lop-sided affair. It is worth it to make the effort to make the teams even, not stack one team. The 2012 game in St. David was also very good and evenly split.
It was reproted that Freeport-MacMoran graciously donated a good deal of money to host the game in Duncan. Duncan is not any less central than Heber, in my opinion, but it is pretty isolated. They do typically have a very nice field, however. Also, I would suspect that for the majority of athletes and families attending the game, Duncan averages as close as Heber.
I was told by Coach Merrell from Duncan that the defensive MVP went to Glen Tavesi from Pima. I wasn't at the game but Coach Merrell said Tavesi had three interceptions and what looked like a fourth that was called incomplete. That's a lot of picks against good competition.
Tavesi did play a real good game, I've always been impressed with him. Jesse Long was the defensive MVP from the other team from Salome. Offensive MVP's I believe were Kody Low & Nich Stalloch. The team MVP's I believe were Cale Merrell & Dallyn Despain! It was a well fought game with LOTS of hard hitting for an All Star Game!
