Let me preface the following statement with-- I like my school, like my hometown, and am very close to many of the kids whom I have had the opportunity to work with for many, many years. Since I have always believed it is about the kids, I struggle to keep my mouth shut when I feel like they are getting a raw deal. But since you asked, and since I struggle----
You are trying to get me in trouble aren't you?!!! Before I go and offend 95% of the town with the politically incorrect truth. The following statements are just my educated opinion(whether you believe them true or not depends on how much Kool aid you drink).. Also let me say that for 25 years I am one of very few people who have not drunk the kool aid. To that end, unless I am assigned to work here-(we request not to work here)-, I am usually elsewhere on Friday night's. However, I always see SJ play twice each year because I'm asked to work a couple of scrimmages (red/white and Blue Ridge/SJ) this year. After being up close and personal at those two events my previous perceptions were confirmed. I previously wrote that both Blue Ridge and SJ are as poor of teams this year, as I have ever seen from each respective school(again before my house and cars are egged, that is just my opinion). The results Blue Ridge getting waxed, and SJ winning but should have lost, indicate that when I say something about a team or school, it isn't because I'm a fan or not a fan, or wearing rose colored glasses. I'm giving an opinion based on too many years experience and through a football junkies eyes.
This past Friday, I wasn't assigned to work so I could have attended the game. However, I have already seen more than enough in the prior weeks and year, soooo, I went out to dinner instead. As I came back into town after dinner, I could see the scoreboard at the field from a distance. It looked like SJ was losing from the highway, and it is only a couple of blocks to the school from the highway, so my wife and I drove over to confirm the score. It was 24-20 Window Rock, with about 9 minutes left in the 4th. We did not stay- My youngest daughter however had gone to the game with family friends, and as I was dozing off to sleep she came home. I recall hearing something about a trick play to win the game. That's all I know about the game, except to read the write up in the paper about 300 wins and another Bride kid having a big game on the ground.
What I know about Window Rock-- I believe I saw them twice last year-had a new coach from the Benson area and they improved greatly from early to late games I did. They have a few skill position players that were underclassmen last season that stood out when you watched them play. Receiver, running back and QB. I would imagine they are Seniors, and it appears from total yardage that the porous SJ defense did not provide much resistance. Paper said total yardage was about 550 for Window Rock, to 350 for SJ.
What I know about SJ--and this is where I get in trouble. The kids need change, more importantly they need at least 10 more knowledgeable coaches throughout the football program from top to bottom(little league to high school). The head honcho MUST be involved at all levels. Enthusiasm is at an all time low and has been on the decline for years. They are not particularly talented, the senior class as a whole has never had much success, they seem aloof, lack aggressive personalities, just simply are not football players(this DOES NOT mean they are not good kids), and they are few in Numbers. To sum it up, As I drove by the school last night to get my daughter from practice, I believe I counted more boys on the soccer pitch, than I counted at either football scrimmage. There are many reasons for that IMO but I'm sure I have offended half the town. So I better go park my cars inside the garage and start mixing the Kool aid. While the Kool aid drinkers are slowly dwindling, there are still plenty of thirsty folks.around here
You have fantastic eyes if you can tell from that video if the kid is in or out. A couple of things are very clear however, the line judge is absolutely nowhere near where he should be on the play. Why he stayed at the line of scrimmage is simply poor officiating. He has two responsibilities on this final play, first he must determine and indicate a forward or backwards pass, then he has downfield responsibilities with regard to his sideline. He failed on both accounts and depending on in or out of bounds it could have cost window rock a game. The second thing that is clear, is Window Rock deserved to lose, simply based on inexplicable defense. In that situation you play 5 guys deep, tackle everything in front and you win the game. Unbelievable you start that play with a single deep or two deep safety. Good teams, and teams that understand the game don't allow plays like that.
Interesting questions Metro. Not sure If I'm equipped to give a fully educated opinion on the true talent level. This group of Seniors is the first class I have not personally worked with in many, many years. So while I see some kids with some ability, I don't see the kids that when you watch them play you say--that kid can play. So I guess the easy answer is, Football talent wise, I don't see it. From my perspective,Football knowledge, is almost nonexistent, but that has been a problem for years. Funny because I had this exact conversation with Coach Morgan today, about football knowledge. I mean things you expect kids to understand and know, they don't, and it just isn't getting taught, and when your a Senior, it is way to late. They don't watch the game, love the game, and for the most part, for many years kids who have loved the game, walk away with a sour taste when they are done. That is why I said, you need at least 10 guys, who know the game, and actually have input to get involved at all levels.
A perfect example of this was relayed to me by my brother who attended the game. Remember, I worked the scrimmage, we asked both head coaches before we started the scrimmage, would they like us to go over the new rules with them or the kids. One coach said he had been over them with his kids and coaches already, the other coach said Nah. My brother said SJ was penalized on the kickoff for a kid being beyond five yards from the ball at kickoff. Simply put, that is a failure in not teaching, even when given the opportunity. What is worse is according to the story i was told, the special teams coach had no idea of the new rule.
As for Moro, his genius was always in whom he surrounded himself with. He isn't some genius, except to say genius in having Bob London and a bunch of other great coaches do all the dirty work, while he got the accolades. So No Moro would not fix this situation, it will take years, and a massive amount of work starting at the little league level to get back to that level some day.

I'm not saying he is IN or OUT because I can't tell for sure. He very well could have been out, but the only one who truly knows is the kid himself, because nobody who could make the call was anywhere near him.
I hear it all the time from the locals here. We have some people here who are betting against the kids. Its crazy to think how our own town members have 0 faith in the kids. They'll prove people wrong this year, you watch. They will be title contenders by the end of the year.
I've never seen anyone "bet" against the kids, and I always hope they contend. However, I am also a realist, and I don't believe they are anywhere near the top 5 teams in this division and I believe the rest of the season will prove that thought process right. YC, ALA, JOY, Tempe Prep, Thatcher and RV are all significantly better.
They will go 1 win against Page and 3 losses in those 4 games IMO. RV could get real ugly on the scoreboard, I just hope tempers are kept in check, and the players stay healthy and smart. I had a conversation with coach Bell after the state title game against YC and he was still simmering about SJ refusal to give them film on YC whom they had lost to earlier in the playoffs. I can't repeat what was said, I can only suggest he and RV will not have forgotten. I suspect.they will use this game to make that statement about their disapproval of that situation loud and clear.
My apologies, I was wrong. SJ likely will go 0-4 in this stretch, as they currently after last night are 0-2(maybe the officials cost them the game against Page as well). I don't see a prayer of them winning either of the next two games. To my credit however, I did not plan on a couple of injuries in my prediction that they would at least win 1 of the 4. Having your starting QB in an option attack, unable to be a threat due to lack of mobility from injury, simply limits them to much offensively to have success. Personally, the kid doesn't see the practice or game field until after RV, and see if he can heal. Without him, they simply cannot mount any sustained offensive attack. I don't make those decisions however.
This is a program in steep decline, and has been so for a long period of years. You have one adult attempting to coach both JV and Freshman teams--IMPOSSIBLE!!!!! You have more kids playing soccer than in your football program for the first time in the schools history. You have a systemic pattern from the top down of Blame anybody but me attitude. You have an accepting of this blame anybody but me attitude from those who can do something about it. You have run through and out of anybody willing to help anymore. You have underclassmen on this team who swear they will not play next year. The work ethic is gone, the love of the game from the kids is nonexistent, the talent level is at an all time low, and the Horizon is cloudy as far as the eye can see. This is my town, my high school, kids I know, and to watch this train wreck that has been coming for years--at every turn telling people what is happening only to have them look the other way makes me sick for the kids. It will be a long, long climb back up, when that day comes.
I'm not sure but it appears Sprinkler has a better handle on the state of SJ Football than you do. As for me, I've been hearing that SJ is not the team it used to be. I do not live there but it appears that information is correct. RV on the other hand is a legit State Title contender. I've seen them play this year and was very impressed.
