Superior does as good a job as I have seen in DVI of running a spread passing attack. The timing is impressive and their quarterback play has been excellent for quite a few years. It's especially tough for DVI as most of their opponents will only see that offense once during the season. Defensively, they are willing to hit and play hard.
I'm very interested to see the result of Superior/Ray. Pima beat both teams by very similar margins and they are similar teams. Subsequently, seeing how Ray matches up with GC and Mogollon will be eye-opening. Lot of good games left on the schedule.
I had the opportunity to watch both teams play the same night a couple of weeks ago. I watched Superior beat up of the Fort for the first half of that game and then went and watched Ray beat up on Valley Union for the second half of that game.
Superior looked great, but a lot of that was a match-up issue. The Fort just didn't have the horses to play the spread game. Offensively Superior is fast, have talent across the field, have a good quarterback and execute well. Defensively they play aggressive and hit hard. They don't seem to have a lot of depth. Not a lot of kids on the sideline and a lot of kids playing both ways, and the kids that were on the sideline looked young. That game was in hand early and was over at half time (50-8)
Ray looked good as well in the second half of the Valley game. The score was a 20 - 19 at half time, but according to others that were there for the first half the score didn't accurately reflect Ray's dominance of Valley in the first half (touchdowns called back, turnovers, and big plays by Valley kept the score close but Ray was clearly the dominant team). Then in the second half Ray just walked away from Valley. Ray plays more of a conventional offense, execute well and have talented kids. Defensively they are sound, tackle well and looked like they were in better shape than valley. final score Ray 48 - 20
My opinion? I pick Superior over Ray by a touchdown or two. 4th or 5th best team in the state. That date with Gilbert Christian Oct 3rd will be a battle and will be a good game to watch.
I give the slight edge to Superior as well, but it would not be a shock at all to see Ray win. I agree also that they both have to be top six (or so). That's why, given the information I have and games I've seen, I can't see much separation between Ray, Superior, Mogollon, VL, and GC. As has been said, though, all one has to do is follow the rest of Ray's season for that to clear up.
1- Bagdad 2- Pima not far behind #1 3- Mogollon not far behind #2 4- Gilbert Christian not far behind #3 5- Ray a ways behind team #4 6- Superior a little behind #5 7- Valley union a little behind #6 8- Valley Lutheran, Duncan, ??? A little behind 7
What's your thoughts??? Did I miss anyone? I've seen 5 teams play of the nine teams listed.
I'm gonna use comparable scores (probably to my ultimate demise).
Superior (at the very least) beat Ft. Thomas as handily as did GC - actually worse. Pima beat Ray and Superior by a very similar margin. Ray beat Valley Union pretty easily. Valley Union seems to be very similar (maybe better) to St. David, who gave GC a decent game according to reports. GC and Mogollon down to the wire. VL doesn't play comparable teams, but are definitely dangerous. Bagdad 36 - Pima 32
Some teams obviously match up better (or worse) against others. Some of these games were early. And some may have had factors like injuries of which I'm not aware. However, put together, I still see Bagdad and Pima on one level and cannot work my mind around a significant difference in Mogollon, GC, VL, Ray, and Superior. Maybe it should be Pima/GC, then Mogollon/GC, then Ray/Superior/VL.
At any rate, Ray will have the answers to all of that.
