Very interested to see the rankings this morning. Checking Calpreps and Maxpreps (which are updated daily) nothing has changed near the top of the rankings, but the gap between Mogollon/Bagdad, and Pima/GC is getting quite small. It's interesting that the AIA rankings actually are pretty close, but where they deviate, it seems drastic. Salome, St. David and Mayer continue to get a boost from the AIA rankings over Superior/Valley Union. I realize that could change this morning with VU's recent victory, but it will be interesting to compare after today's new AIA list. Having seen most of the teams now, it seems clear that VU and Superior are both better than those three teams. From my past coaching experience, it almost always seemed like the Calpreps rankings were much closer to where a group of experts would agree the teams were ranked. Not sure where the AIA formula differs.
One other note - looking at the Calpreps page, there have been zero upsets in D6 this season based on where the teams are currently ranked. That's probably more common in D6 than other divisions, but still fairly enlightening. Using the "eye" test, does anyone remember an upset this year? Using the AIA rankings, Valley Union was an upset (though a very mild one) over St. David.
