I've never watched VU this year, but I have (personally) played vs mogollon this year and can tell you that they are FAST, and they will hit you until that whistle is blown. I know VU is good but coming into Heber and winning is a very hard thing to do.
I disagree that VU is not near as good as they were last year. I think they are better. Their backfield is certainly better. I think SD is also better than last year and the SD/VU game this year was evenly matched, whereas SD beat VU handily last year.
I don't know if VU can handle Mogollon. I would think the Mustangs would have to be favored, especially at home. Is Mogollon as good this year as last? Certainly their backfield should be as it's the same kids, just a year older. They did lose a lot on defense and a lot on the line, but they lucked into a nice move-in that has helped them too.
Home field benefits Mogollon. The Mustangs also have the better QB. RB might be a toss up as Baker and Landwerlen are both outstanding. Coaching might be a toss-up. Defense? I don't know.
And... like Mayer42 stated: Anything can happen in the playoffs.
I will predict this: The winner of this game will be in the championship game.
And VU lacks a mission as we have seen by their appearances against St. David and Orme. This my friends is the differnce. They do just what needs to be done to win but as we saw against St. David that isnt enough and Orme almost made them pay for it. Mogollon wins big in this one.
I dont think VU is lacking in anything. Three turnovers that turn into points is not lacking. (it was raning!) They were controlling the game till the end of the third (against St. David). They will give mogollon trouble and if the ball rolls their way it might just be an upset. But I will go with Mogollon in this one.
Winner of this game rolls right into the final game!
I hear alot about VU's RB. How come nobody is giving Boone Baker any love?! I watched this kid break tackles and run through people for some breath taking runs. He's not just fast, but he can carry half of the opposing team on his back and still move faster than alot of players. And how is VU's passing game? Maner is a beast. He's got a cannon and incredible accuracy. I just don't hear anybody else saying so. Mogollon is the favorite, but nobody is talking them up. Is everyone praying for an upset or something?

I think its because we all know how good Mogollon is already. They are my fav to win it. They have weapons at all positions.
Well I in no way want to defend VU's but i gotta say on all of the different 1A threads on this site, VU's runningbacks are hardly mentioned and when so usually just by FbFan99 who is related to one of them. I do hear quite abit of cudos go to Baker as it should be. I think people don't really talk them up because they don't need it. The whole team is stacked and they are favored to win not just this game but the championship. Maner certainly gets plenty of cudos for his play also. You are right, Baker and Maner are both beasts and will tear up VU's questionable defense. VU has not played anybody until the last two games where they lost one of those and barely pulled out the other. Mogollon has dominated teams like Bagdad and Joe City and overall have had a much tougher schedule than VU. I personally think that Mogollon will not have any trouble with VU and will win big over them. I don't say the politically correct things on here as most by trying to talk the underdog up but I have also given Mogollon plenty of credit that they will win this game. Sometimes you see in the posts the other teams name more than see what people are really saying. I don't see anyone picking VU over Mogollon. That should tell you sometihng... THAT EVERYONE KNOWS MOGOLLON IS GOOD Mustang you don't need to worry. As for credit... they will get plenty as the games go on as they put up the numbers.
Valley Unions #25 is number one running back in AZ(1-5A). According to Maxpreps? I think hes at #3 right now, only because stats are not reported for the last game. He had 254 yards against Orme. He is very good!
St David -32/ Joe City -45 Mog-48/VU-54 VL-66/Sup-16 Bagdad-42/mayer-24
1Asuperfan, you lost all your credibility when you picked Joe City to score 45 points! They might score 44, they might score 54, they might score 12, they might score 102, but they won't score 45 because they don't kick! heh.
Of the teams left in the playoffs, the only odd numbers will come from SD, Bagdad, Sup, or VL. Nobody else kicks, do they?
I would agree with you, however, that VU #25 is a very good RB. I would also agree with Mustang that Baker from Mog is a very good RB. I would also add that JC has a very good RB, as does VL and Mayer. SD also has some good backs. VU's #25 played fantastic against Orme. I must say his rushing yards were inflated against SD, however, and that he was shorted on reception yards. SD has a more accurate statistician, heh.
tgr10, you have an advantage in that you know who I am but I don't know who you are, but that's okay. It doesn't really matter to me. VU's #25 has gotten praise from lots more people than just me and it has nothing to do with relations (not related to him anyway), but does have something to do with familiarity as I've seen him play quite a bit. He's good and you know it, but SD still stopped him, especially in the 2nd half, so that's saying a bunch. SD is a very good team.
Can they beat Joe City? I think they can. Will they? I don't know. I'm like Metro, I think it could go either way. I'll sure be rooting for the Tigers!
Can VU beat Mogollon? I'll say this, I didn't give the Blue Devils much of a chance against JC in JC last year and they were a couple yards away from doing it. So, I would not count them out in the least. I hope they win, but Mogollon certainly has to be the favorite, especially at home.
And yes, Maner and Baker and the Mustang line are scary good.
1Asuperfan has the #2's winning this weekend and that certainly could happen. Most everyone else has both North teams winning and that certainly could happen. I'm hoping for a Southern resurrection to keep the North out of the championship for once. It could happen. It also could be that Bagdad and VL are in the championship. Or Mayer. Superior? nah, sorry Panthers... that would be the real long shot. If you want to support the underdog, root for Superior.
I think this game is all up to defense. I believe both teams have the firepower to score, but can either of them get a stop. If this turns out this way i believe the Mustangs will take it. VU had a lot of trouble stopping Orme, a good offense yes, but not even close to the athletes Mogollon has.
Nice arguments FBFan99 and you are right on one point... St Daivd stuffed #25!! Totally shut him down. Now I gave him credit that he is good and that he was getting less press than baker so I have defended him but this all leads to my point in the Joe City vs. St. David game. Joe City will fall because of the St. David Defense. Yes St. David has an explosive offense that will score big numbers but the defense will shut down Joe City thus producing the win. I am not at all suprised that VU has inflated his stats. havent thought all season that he was dominating the way they say. But why??? Is he trying to get recruited?? Are they trying to put fear into people?? How many other teams are doing the same???
HOLD ON! TIME-OUT! I don't believe VU is inflating Landwerlen's stats, especially intentionally. I should have been more clear in my flippant remark.
This is the only thing that I believe: I believe that VU had Landerwerlen's RUSHING yards a little inflated and his RECEPTION yards a little short in the SD game. That is to say, I think they gave him rushing yards where he should have had reception yards. That's it. On their MaxPreps site, he isn't listed as catching any passes, but I saw at least one right in front of my face and I had him with another catch, but wasn't absolutely sure it was him because I couldn't see it very well. So, I might be wrong on that one. This would also affect their QB's passing yards as well. I think they shorted him passing yards, based on my observations and calculations. I don't in any way think this was intentional, just a mistake made in the rain where it was difficult to see. For a team like VU that doesn't pass much, stat people probably aren't used to seeing and logging pass so when they can't tell for sure, maybe they go with the odds or tendencies.
This issue will all be resolved as soon as the game tape is watched and the stats are checked, which just hasn't happened yet, according to my kind and lovely VU contact. It's entirely possible that I'm wrong and my eyes deceived me... it wouldn't be the first time. The tape will resolve the issue, which really isn't a big deal anyway even for us compulsive types that like to be accurate.
To be fair, it's hard to take stats in the pouring rain. Some discrepancies might be expected.
Again, I don't think there is any evidence that VU is inflating his rushing stats intentionally. Actually, the overall stats were pretty close, just differences in where the yards were placed. The tape will settle the issue, but since it's not a huge deal anyway, there hasn't been a big rush to resolve the discrepancy.
Finally... Tgr10, you finally wrote yourself out of the closet and I now know who you are, but I'll keep it under my hat. :)
