On another thread there has been some talk as to is Mogollon as good as they were last year or VU but the real story this week is this game here. Joe City is probably down from last year but always a threat. Coach Bryant moves on if the talent isn't there as we at St. David know. But one thing for sure is that St. David IS as good as last year and better. They didn't live up to their potential against Mogollon with the flu bug hitting at the wrong time last year. But this year is different. Joe City will have their hands full with the likes of Davis, Kartchner and Mayberry. And with Neiland, they can score from 50 yards out if they need to. That is hard to defend. Davis will kill you with his arm and if you cover his recievers, he will kill you with his legs. Mayberry is a beast defensively and is a legitamate threat to run wild on you when given the chance. Defense is strong, aggressive and physical. So to get the conversation started..... I don't know much about Joe City other than they must have talent considering they still have Bryant. They must be good because they only lost to Mogollon although I think from what people say, Mogollon out matches Joe City this year. So "experts" how do these two match up??
i'm not an expert but seeing both mogollon and joseph city play i personally think jo city is the better team. yes they did loose to mogollon during the season but if given the chance to play mogollon on again which scould be the state game i say jo city takes it wit a close a game.
I am also no expert, but I think Mogollon is better and they showed that by beating JC at JC two weeks ago. I've thought they were probably the better team all along. Still, it's really hard to beat a good team twice in the same season and if they meet up in the championship game, it could be a battle. Bryant is cagey.
As far as who has the advantage in SD Friday night? I don't know. SD has the better QB. JC probably has the edge in RB. Defense is a toss up. Kicking game goes to SD. Coaching? Bryant is much more experienced in these games and playing in SD will be like coming home. Home field advantage goes to SD obviously, but how much of an advantage is it?
Is everyone healthy on both teams? That could be a factor.
Last year SD seemed to peak at the VU game and for them, that was the pinnacle of their season. They were sick and came out flat against Mogollon. It seems to me that this year they have more fire to continue beyond winning the South Region so I don't think they'll come out flat. I think we'll see a good game from the Tigers. Will that be enough to beat the defending champs who are hungry for another shot at Mogollon? I don't know.
Remember that Bryant has a history of losing during the season only to come back and win it all with teams no one thought were the best in the state. His last champion at Pima lost in the regular season to VU and went through the bracket as a #2 seed.
It will be a close one till halftime. Joseph city will run away with it in the second half. Both these teams will play the best they have played all year. From what Ive seen JC has the better team overall!
Nice analogies there but yes although Im a bit bias, I have studied both teams and I think St David will be more than Joe City is expecting and will be the team who pulls away the second half. Joe City won't be expecting what St David will bring. They will underestimate this team which will kill them in the end. Davis is a beast (as is Maner from Mogollon) and can burn you passing or running. The closest thing Joe City has seen to the talent of St. David is Mogollon and they didn't handle that very well. I think it will be close the first half, each team scoring and the score flip-flopping. But the second half the Tigers will control. this is because not only is their offense so powerful but so is their defense and their size and strength will wear Joe City down and take control.

What makes you think that JC will underestimate St. David? I think they know whats comming up. Bryant is no dummy. He will have his team ready.
And if you saw the film of the Mogollon JC game then your oppinion on how JC "handled" them would change.
And that is exactly why I pick St David. I never said it would be a blow out. But St. David doesn't turn the ball over and are capapble of the big play. Joe City is as well but I think St. David has more weapons and has a higher probability of the big play. Defense is the big key and St. David causes turnovers. They will be physical with Joe City and that will wear the Wildkats down. I know Bryant is no dummy and he has proven that but I think as a whole they may overlook St. David's strength.
Does anyone know the last time coach Bryant did not make it past the quarterfinals in the playoffs? I think he lost his in his first year at St. David to NW Christian, but don't know if he's been bumped out of the quarters since.
Interesting story, Metro. I didn't live in SD at the time, but I remember walking in late and catching the last bit of that game, watching from the Mayer side and saw that last goal line stand by Mayer. I'm not even sure why I was there--probably visiting inlaws. I kept thinking... St. David doesn't have someone who can kick a FG and win? You don't know how many times I've heard about that game from a few guys in town who played in it. I think some claim they DID cross the goal line.
Anyway... when I was leaving the game, I saw some keys on the ground and I picked them up and asked, "Anyone lose some keys?".
Well... I really don't remember finding some keys, but that would make a better story, wouldn't it?!

WOW. I cannot stand when people post that know NOTHING about a situation.
You are clearly from St. David, but understand one thing.... Bryant leaving had NOTHING to do with having/not having talent. IN FACT...the year Bryant left St. David he predicted a championship in Football AND basketball because St. David was loaded with talent!!!
Bryant left St. David because of the direction the school was headed (putting music and other things before sports). The school did not support his Saturday morning basketball with community members, sporting events, weight lifting classes, or other things. This became extremely frustrating, therefore Bryant chose to move his family to Pima. Pima was the option because he had family there, NOT because of their supposed talent. IN FACT, he had no idea what Pima's talent was, and didn't know a single person on the team.
SO, before you go making assumptions, know the FACTS......
OK, in this thread, and the other one discussing the Mogollon and VU game, almost all the talk is about how great this running back is, or how great this quarterback is, butt I don't hear a lot about Defense. Over the years I have learned, and heard it said over and over again, that Defense wins championships.
You generally don't hear someone say "Offense wins championships" I watched the Mogollon and JC game this year and I would bet that anyone else that watched it, who really knows football, would tell you that Mogollon won that game in the second half with their "D" (turnovers). The same thing happened in the 2nd half when ST. David beat VU (4 turnovers in 2nd half, two of which accounted for 14 points while holding VU to 8 points in the second half).
So I went on to MaxPreps to review some defensive stats and here is what they revealed:
St. David has only allowed 47 points in 8 games, the next closest team's interestingly enough are; Joseph City - 141, Mogollon - 153, and VU - 162 (all adjusted back to 8 games). Interestingly enough, aren't these the best 4 teams in the state? Kind of proves the point of "D" wins ball games wouldn't you say. BTW, of the teams left in the tournament Valley Lutheran is next closest with 216, but Bagdad (259 had to play two top 5 teams). Just as a note I noticed in another thread that someone had JC beating St, David 55 to something. I just can't see JC scoring more points in 4 quarters than 8 other teams scored in 32 quarters. Are they really that good?
Then I checked the turnover stats on MaxPreps (for those teams that Post them) and found that St. David has 12 interceptions and 25 fumble recoveries, 37 take aways. Those numbers are staggering!!!! Especially when compared to Mogollon's 6 & 10, VU's 5 & 10, JC does not post stats, VL's 8 & 7, and Bagdad's 9 and 12.
If the old adage is in fact true, Mogollon will beat VU and St. David will beat JC, and those two teams will eventually meet in the championship game! If I were in Vegas that is where my money would be. And then, in the end St. David's Defense just might be the difference again because "DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS"
