Im kind of disappointed that all of the 2A quarterfinal games are on Saturday this year. I was looking forward to catching this game on Friday night, then catching the 1A title game on Saturday night. Oh well.
I just love highschool football and watching the game. Seen a lot of games this year but not as a fan as I had a job to do. Really miss just watching the game as a fan. Caught my first game of the year last week as a fan with no other responsibilities and enjoyed it. Bad move by the AIA to schedule them all on Saturday this year.
On the topic of the post, With Thatchers huge win over Willcox in Willcox last week, they face another foe who beat them during the year. I was talking with a parent of a Thatcher coach this week about what they did to turn it around. Seems Willcox had a stud LB who made many plays in the first Matchup. The good coach he is, he assigned somebody to get that LB every play, and wouldn't you know it the Thatcher offense rolled big. I expect that Thatcher will make the same type of adjustments for Tempe Prep. We will see if Tempe Prep can beat a good team 2 times in the same year. Should be a good game.
I don't know if I buy the "Oh, lets just block the stud LB and all will go well" story. There's got to be more to it than that.
Someone should be blocking the LB on every play anyway. Maybe they assigned a specific person to that guy, changed their offense a little bit so that same guy would be available to block the LB every play. But, what if the LB moves to a different spot? Changed his position on the field? Blocker probably can't move to adjust last minute like defense can.
I still haven't heard if previous week's illness was a factor at all. Or, if Thatcher is just finally healthy and running full strength.
And, what is it that TP guys know about Thatcher's film study? Are they filming the coaches to steal plays and signs?
Where are all the TP fans now....actually congrats to them. A great year and a fun ride. Its really hard to win a state title and it usually takes a few attempts at it before the kids and coaches get seasoned enough to grind it out. Plus, a tough Draw didn't help TP either. Again, you should be proud.
Thats exactly my point. It doesn't matter if you are a charter school or a private school. You still have the entire phoenix metropolitan area talent pool at your fingertips. Thatcher only has the Gila Valley, Williams only has Williams, Willcox only has Willcox, St. Johns only has St.Johns. Those schools make do with what they have. They build thier programs starting with Pee Wee programs and some years don't have the athletes because there are none to be found. Good luck not finding enough athletes in Phoenix. You and your Christian school/private counterparts need to grow some privates and petition up. We don't want you in 2A. You are ruining this division. If it isn't enough that you have the entire Phoenix talent pool to choose from, you are manipulating the system year in and year out in order to facillitate your success. Last year it was powerpoints, it didn't work out too well. This year it was changed to opponents/opponents victory points so as to ensure all of the teams from the "Valley" made it into the state playoffs. LEAVE THIS DIVISION.
How, exactly, can the "entire Phoenix metropolitan talent pool" be available to Tempe Prep when the only way to get INTO TPA is a lottery system? If you saw the geeky little 6th & 7th graders at TPA, you'd REALLY know what it's like to "make do with what you have." Kids in Thatcher, Williams, St. Johns and other small communities grow up WANTING to be football players for their high school. Kids who get into TPA are there for a good education.
Furthermore, you completely ignore enrollment. Of the schools you listed, only Williams is close to TPA in number of students; the others are much larger. TPA always has a larger female enrollment than male because in general, girls can handle the academic workload better than boys. TPA has between 100-110 boys - wow, BIG advantage - and the fact that half of them are on the football team is due to an excellent coaching staff that has built a very solid program working with what little they have not only in terms of students but facilities as well.
As far as your accusation of "manipulating the system year in and year out," show us the proof. TPA has only been 2A for two seasons, so take your accusations elsewhere.
"LEAVE THIS DIVISION." "We don't want you in 2A." I see your ignorance is exceeded only by your arrogance.
He just wants all the competition out of 2A. Then it would be Thatcher vs. St Johns, with occasionally a Willcox, Camp Verde or Benson in the mix. This "endless talent base" argument has been proven false time and time again, but they keep saying it and a new generation believes it. They just don't get it that schools here in PHX have the same number of students to choose from as they do, give or take the limits of 2A. Like them, we only "choose" from the students who walk through the doors.
As I said in another post, not everyone from eastern AZ is like this guy - the people I personally know are all right - but there are still a few who think only the only people who work hard for their success are from small towns.
Is anybody taking what you are saying seriously? TPA is the complete opposite of both scenarios...good ol' boys not in the city who the only thing they do is eat and breathe football, AND the big Christian schools with 400 plus kids. Don't go lumping us in with anyone...we are quite unique. And no one is making excuses...TPA lost...period. They beat themselves. But you have to acknowledge the film situation...if the shoe was on the other foot...I think Thatcher would be whining. As for leaving the 2A, TPA and up and coming teams are only making it better.
