I thought that this would be a fun topic seeing how this Saturday the first champion of this decade will be
crowned. I'm going to have to go with my favorite, the Wildcats of Mayer in 06'. Although I missed the
first 5 years of the football decade, the last 5 were pretty darn exciting. I may be a bit biased in my pick
but still that team had many studs. They were the hardest hitting team I have ever seen at the 1A level.
They made all the right plays at all the right times. I'm sure the coach had something to do with that.
I was fortunate to be able to watch most of their games from the sidelines. For those 8-man football
fans who did not get to see this team play, you missed out on a great football experience. Of course this is only 1 of many great football teams of the decade, but to me they were the best. Let me know of your
But one thing to consider, a few of the so called "1a powers" were playing in 2A at the beginning of the decade. Mogollon and Mayer were in 2A. Valley Union and Pima might have been in 2A as well during that time.
I just bring this up because it might have made things a little easier for St. David to roll through 1A when a few of the traditional 1A powers were playing 2A at the time.
If I was to not include Mayer in the discussion, I would almost have to say that last year's JC team was one of the best.
They were just loaded. And Zach Baldwin was such a beast. I saw JC go for a 4th and 10 in their OWN territory in Heber and pick it up with a simple power Iso play. Thats how confident Bryant was in his team to run the ball and run it well. Mogollon could not tackle him that game. And if MOGOLLON has trouble tackling a guy, you know he's a beast.
I like the 2007 Valley Union team as well. They were very similar to '05/'06 Mayer as far as their strengths and style of play.
The Pima teams with Nephi Bryant were good. That kid was a gamer.
Im gonna have to give my nod to last years joe city team. They were pretty dang good. The 06 mayer team was stacked as well i agree that would be a terific game to watch. another team that i think belongs in this discusion is the 08 mogollon team now i know they did lose a game in the regular season but they KILLED pima in the finals.
1976---Tucson Deaf & Blind 42 Mayer 22 I don't know if this was an upset, but it sure looks upsetting.
1994---Mogollon 20 Mayer 20 Mayer was the slight favorite in this one. Not an upset, but the Mayer players were upset. Yeah I played for Mayer that year .
1995---Fredonia 38 Mogollon 32 Mogollon beat Fredonia during the season, and were supposed to do the same in the finals, but a running back by the name of Billy Johnson had other plans. That was the last year that coach "Mont" Griffiths won a title.....that guy coached for a long time.
Speaking of coach Griffiths...funny story...1A all-star week 97'. A bunch of us players from the North squad were hangin outside the motel near downtown Springerville/Round Valley. And as no surprise the local girls got wind that there were football players staying in town for the week. They enjoyed driving by the motel during the evening, and we enjoyed watching. On one particular evening, a few of the girls decide to give us a little "Flash" as they drove by. I quickly went and grabbed my camera. As the girls drove by again I greeted their "Flash" with a "Flash" of my camera. I was on target. As I turned to the left , there was coach Griffiths standing with a big Sh!t eatin' grin on his face. He'd been watching along with us. Enjoyed the heck out of that week. Topped it off with a butt-kickin of the South squad. Oh and by the way, Wal-Mart did develop the pics from that week, just not the "good" pics. Peace
