I hope I dont eat my words on this, but I have a feeling that we are getting ready to see St. Johns steam roll some teams. It seems like this happens every year, you dont hear much from the Johnnies because of the weak North conference. People start saying " It seems like St. Johns is a liitle down this year" or "They are rebuilding" and then come Playoff time we find out they are legit.
I'm basicly saying what we already know St. Johns is good every year, down year or not, but It just feels like 2A is a little down over all this year and St johns is on their normal pace. I think we could see some lopsided scores.
When I was playing I used to hate losing to St Johns in a blowout, but I loved seeing them go in to the playoffs and beat up on all those city boys. I still love watching them play, you always know your going to see some hard hitting physical football.
Yeah this is definitely not the year to gage prior victories. Lets just see who wins the game. I mean lets not forget that technically anyone in the playoffs right now could theorhetically win it all. I know some people have their favorites and talking about it makes for good forum chatter but really any team can win.
That is about as off target a post as I have seen in some time. Hopefully the kids don't read that crap and buy into the hype or football season will be over saturday night. This is not a SJ team that is heads and shoulders above the competition. This team is definitely not as good as last years squad, especially offensively. However they have a bunch of tough hard nosed kids who won't quit--which is really what makes them a contender every year regardless of talent level. It is hard work, time spent on the field and good kids that make that happen more than anything.
To coach Morgans credit he has done a great job with the defense in taking quick athletic kids and putting them up front on the line of scrimmage. A quick athletic kid is going to creat havoc for a bigger slower, possibly stronger kid unless they run right at you. Now if coach would take the same approach on the offensive side of the ball and take those same athletes and put them on the offensive line---alah Blue Ridge--this team would be solid offensively as well. Not near as explosive as in the past but very solid.
I'm anxious to see Camp Verde. They are a very good team playing very well right now, noticed by their results towards the end of the year. SJ will not win if they have another performance like they did against Bisbee. Play like they did against Williams in the week prior though, and they are certainly capable of winning it all.
Agreed, just based on what I've heard from people who have played SJ. After they destroyed Williams, I was thinking that SJ must be way better than anyone thought, then after their performance against Bisbee I'd put them in the pack with everyone else (everyone else in the top 7 or 8 of the 2A). So, seems like SJ was really up for Williams, but played with less intensity against Bisbee. If they play CV like that, they will get beat. I think CV is starting to come into their own right now. I think this might be quite a good game.
Whoa Whoa Whoa! I post a comment about my 2nd favorite team in Northern Az and it gets called "crap" and "off target". Ouch, that hurts Sprinkler, especially coming from you since ive enjoyed reading your posts about St. Johns. I want to address that real quick and then back to football. About the players reading this "crap" and causing them to lose, Give me a break man, I hope we can give a litlle more credit to the coaches and players. If teams are losing games because of that maybe we should all stop posting.
As far as what I said about the Johnnies, I am sticking by it until we see the score of the Camp Verde game. I know nobody wants to compare head to head because it has been a crazy season, but St Johns beat Williams 55 to 0 and the williams goes down and plays a close game with Tempe prep, where some people think williams dominated that game but the score did not show it. I wont act like I know more about st johns than you Sprinkler but like I said I just have a feeling. No hard feelings though man, please keep the posts coming, I enjoy reading them! If you you want to post it I would love to here some details on why you think last years team was better.
Iron.....SJ ought to take your words as a compliment and leave it at that. I too would give Morgan and Garcia more credit because I know they will be very prepared for CV on Saturday. Now whether or not the boys execute like they did with Williams or like they did with Bisbee will remain to be seen.
As far as last years team being better than this years......well, that is debatable. I think they are comparable. You have a more versatile QB this year and a smaller line. Last year you had a bigger line and some hosses with a QB that was adequate. Now two years ago, no question the team with bride, hauser, whal, nice line etc. was far superior.
Coach Morgan is a great coach and in my opinion Coach Garcia is waaaayyyy underrated because that dude has his defense crankin on all cylinders year in and year out with whatever group of boys he is dealt.
They better be ready though, CV is coming as well. Good luck SJ
I agree for the most part with Sprinklers assessment about the Redskins this season. One thing I feel that is not being addressed here though is how good of a team Bisbee is! They played extremely tough and were pretty quick on the defensive side of the ball. St Johns offense struggled a little and thats why the Redskins only scored 28 points. Unlike Sprinkler and many others, I'm sure, I dont feel that if St Johns plays the way they played against Bisbee that the Skins may loose. I honestly feel that if SJ plays exactly the way they played last week, we will still end the game with a SJ win. I feel Bisbee and Camp Verde are about the same. Camp Verde is probably a little better, but not by much. 2A as a whole is down, and SJ is down from last years team for sure, but they are still IMO, one of the elite teams again this season. Also, I disagree with those that believe that anyone of the teams are capable of winning it all this year. I believe that there are only 2, maybe 3 teams that are remaining that can win it all! Can't wait till Saturday. Should be a great game in SJ.
I meant no disrespect to the post, just that I think when you begin to read the hype, you are ripe for a rude awakening. And Camp Verde is nobody you want to take lightly. The coach said SJ played near flawless football against Williams when I talked with him, and you could tell by the score they had played well. However, it appears that they did not string together the same performance against Bisbee. They will need a much better game this week, or it could get scary.
I haven't been able to see the boys play much this year, matter of fact I've watched them play 1/2 of a football game total. That said I've had the pleasure to coach nearly everyone of them in football. I really like the QB as was pointed out and his versatility, he is a very good all around athlete who I compared at the first of the year to having some of the same skills Ricedorf has. Just hasn't been a starting varsity QB for 3 years now. Barring injury this team has a good shot this season, but a great shot next year with some young, talented groups coming up and a much tougher regular season schedule to prepare them.
What SJ always has are some very good hardnosed tough kids. However, offensively speaking they don't have the same big play ability as in the past--just my opinion. They return most of the defense, and basically only really miss 3 kids from last season that are tough to replace. As mentioned earlier the changes up front on Defense make them pretty solid.
And finally I agree 100% 2a is having a down year in comparison to years past. All that said, I like the parody and the fact that we have 8 teams remaining that all have a chance to win it. I'm looking forward to watching them play a tough Camp Verde team on Friday night. Here is to hoping they put 3 more games together like they did against Williams.
Ok so now I have heard several people say that they think 2A is "down" this year. However, no one has provided any real evidence to back this up so it appears to remain just a suprisingly common opinion. Does anyone have evidence to back this claim up? I think some teams are having great years, some are having poor years, and some are having an average year for thier team. How is that any different than any other year? So if a team other than St Johns, NWC, VC, or SCA isnt in the championship game its a "down" year overall? Isn't the "down year" statement kind of a dig against the teams that are doing well this year? It just sounds like people are setting up the excuse now that if a team other than the ones mentioned above wins the championship then it will be: "Well this team won because everyone esle wasnt as good this year." Granted, maybe one or two of the normal "favorite" teams arent playing as well, but couldn't it also be that other teams have raised their level of play too?
Well I understand where the opinions are coming from with what you talked about with VC and SCA maybe not playing as well this year. But even if that is the case, does that really justify saying the entire 2A is down? (I'm not saying that you are saying that all of 2A is down I just mean the general consensus.)That was how I was basing my point of other teams could just be playing better. Maybe the balance is shifting from just 4 or 5 schools to 7 to 8 or even 10 schools that are getting better with time. If anything it just seems that 2A is becoming more even with talent across the board and instead of just a small handfull of good teams...there are more now. Especially if the trend of this year is the same next year.
I think down year means a bunch of different things depending on perspective. I would certainly agree with the assessment that there are more teams in contention--true contention---- this year than any year I can remember. That to me says that the dominant teams of the past have come back to the pack, more than it says the pack has caught them.
Add to that personal knowledge, and close knowledge of your own team--and yea, I'm going to say that overall it is a down year for the top tier teams. Which in turn means more parody and more exciting, closer games in the playoffs. I'll take the latter, I love it when you have so many teams who truly feel they have as good a shot at the gold ball as the other 7 that are left. And that is no disrespect whatsoever to the team who wins it.
And my preference, and no disrespect to any other teams in the playoffs right now because they are all making their case to deserve to be in the championship, but it would be to see two teams there that people dont expect. That could very well happen. That would make for a much more interesting game in my mind becasue you wouldnt have as much hype preceeding the game in terms of records or previous championships, etc. It would be two even teams fighting it out to the the end. I know the consensus is a "down year" but this could end up being one of the best years in 2A overall because of the multiple teams in serious conention. Starting tomorrow the second season really kicks into gear. It should be exciting.
Darknight, I agree with you that it is a dig to pretty much all the teams this year to say that it is a down year. Thanks for pointing that out. It is kind of a sensitive topic. I would have hated to here someone say it was a down year when I was playing especially if it was my senior year.
Alls I can say to players that might be reading this is, please take what I have to say,or for that matter what anyone on here has to say, with a grain of salt. I for one am no football genius, just a has been that wishes he could be standing in your shoes right now, even if it was to just play one more down of football. Im just glad there is somewhere I can talk football with people that enjoy it as much as I do, I know my family and friends are bored to death hearing me talk about football.
With that being said, The reason I said it could be a down year is because I feel that St. Johns is the elite team this season and I agree with Divet and Sprinkler about the Redskins not being as good as the Shad Bride teams (he was a beast)or some of the other teams of the past. I have no proof, to be honest I have not seen the Johnnies play one down of football this seaon just going off of second hand information.
Wow is all I can say. One of the ugliest, error prone, penalized first halfs I have seen in a long time. Fortuantely for SJ they don't look at style points this time of year. All that matters is the scoreboard at the end of the game and who gets to move on. Got a huge task next week in a very tough NWC team who appears to have a great running back and a very dominant running game. Must clean the mistakes up and try and play as clean of game as possible--in a nutshell try to replicate the Williams game. Also must figure out a way to stop a power rushing attack, something that we have not been able to do in the past. Maybe we have learned something from years past--especially ALA. In order to beat NWC I would suspect it will take SJ shutting down the running game and forcing NWC to beat them throwing the ball. SJ did a fabulous job with RV earlier in the year taking away the passing game, so I know they are capable of taking away a teams strength.
As for the Camp Verde game, as I said it was nothing pretty but sometimes you got to give a little credit to the opponent. Camp Verde has some nice looking athletes and provided a stiff test--congrats to them on a very good year. For SJ Nielsen going down early in the game really creates some huge difficulties offensively. Really need the Sophomore kid to get healthy and fill that other reciever spot next week or it could spell trouble. After Nielsen went down, SJ tried to fill that spot with a kid who flat does not possess a receivers skill set for a couple of series, and then we tried to fill that with a slower bigger kid who is normally a tight end. Great effort from both those kids, but knowing the kids and available skill set that exists, the sophomore is the key here. 3 weeks from the injury, hopefully he is ready to go. Need Nielsen at full strength, or somebody to step up big time. Might also use the spread offense out of a Shotgun and let the athletic ability of the QB create problems for the defense.
