Thought this would be fun to post. There were a lot of great backs this year, boon, baldwin, broom, atkerson, and thats not the end of them. Just thought i should ask who do you think is the best back and why?
It would probably make more sense to compare everyone after the full season and not playoffs (when comparing numbers) since some teams have extra games or byes or aren't even in playoffs.
Just my two sensless cents... of those I saw play THIS year(Landwerlen, Broom, O'Brien, Baldwin), I'd rank them Baldwin, Landwerlen, Broom, O'Brien in that order as far as who I'd most hate to play against. I wouldn't want to play against any of them, but if I HAD to rank them, that's where I'd put them... maybe. I think Broom is the fastest, then Baldwin, then Landwerlen, then O'Brien, but I could be wrong (and they are all fast). I think Baldwin has the better balance and is hardest to tackle. Landwerlen is probably the strongest. O'Brien might have the best upside (college prospect) because of his size. But Broom is so fast...
I'd say there is NO way to know who is the better RB. They are all good. Lots of other good ones too that I didn't see play but heard about.
Ask the guys who had to tackle them. What do they say?
I would have to agree that Broom is the fastest by far, probably with the most talent. I saw him run at the Track and Field States last year and despite having a torn hammie he still was faster than anyone else there. He is very quick. This being said, he doesn't go down without a fight, he can run with multiple people tackling him. He also did not have a very good line this year, but with a solid line as he did last year, he racks up the stats.
Atkerson also has talent, with very good numbers to back it up. He isn't the quickest, but he is very good.
Also, as far as O'Brien goes, I can see the talent but do not think he is all he's hyped up to be. His team would either be very fiery or completely flat. Whenever I watched him play he was decent, but not a top contender.
Baldwin is backed by a good team and has a lot of ability. I've only seen them play a few times but they can always put on some points and a good show
Definitely Baldwin. with the others grouped behind him. A quick comparison of what Landwerlen did compared to Baldwin against the common opponents (St. David and Mogollon) will point this out. I saw (some on film) all 4 games (SD-VU, SD-JC, Mog-VU & Mog-JC) and Baldwin was just about unstoppable while Landwerlin was definitely stopped in both his games. In addition, when you factor in what Baldwin did, carrying his team to a State Championship when everyone knew all they had to do was stop Baldwin, you have to give it to Baldwin.
As far as the other RB's, I haven't seen them play, but am impressed with Broom and Atkerson. Let's just put it this way, if i was picking players for my own team I would rank them in this order: Baldwin, Broom, Landwerlin Atkerson, O'Brien. I personally think Landwerlin is a good RB, but I also think he had some inflated stats in some blowout games where he scored with less than 2 minutes in the game with a ~50 point lead. That's just the way VU rolls.
Baldwin is quick to the hole, tough, very hard to tackle one-on-one, and has speed to take it to the house on any play. Great Back, I just wish he were a senior!!!!!
