This is the first week of the season with quite a few interesting small school vs big school games.
FH vs. Saguaro- FH seems to have a full plate with the Sabercats. This might be a T-birdesque game for Saguaro.
Florence vs Vista Grande- I see Florence coming away with a tight win.
Parker vs Kingman- Parker looks good this year, it will be interesting to see if they can beat a school that has about two thirds as many students as Parker's entire population.
St Johns vs Chinle- Chinle has been beating up on their peers up north, but I see St Johns running away with this one.
Valley Christian vs Casa Grande- CG has about half as many students as when they were in 5A, but they still have more than 4x as many students as VC. VC is struggling this year, and so is CG. This one will be interesting.
and then there is Bisbee (D V) vs Valley Union (D VI). Can someone explain how this one will work? Will Valley Union be playing 11 man this week?
I've heard of teams up in Montana and North Dakota that play against Canadian teams using that same kind of idea. When the Canadian team is on offense, they play Canadian rules; when the American team is on offense, its by American rules. I've also heard of them playing a half of American and a half of Canadian.
VU has done this before. I recall them playing Pusch Ridge a few years ago and winning. A coach told me at the time that he thought it was actually to the 8 man teams advantage (if they have the talent), because they get to play with extra players on D, while the 11 man team has to learn to cover the field with fewer players. Kind of makes sense.
Between Kingman and Parker, Parker has the edge in my opinion. Though Kingman High has around 4 times the students as Parker High, Parker's roster matches Kingman's man for man. Kingman has 18 seniors, Parker has 17. Kingman has 11 juniors, Parker has 13. Kingman has 6 sophomores, Parker has 3. Parker and Kingman have similar passing and rushing production, though Kingman has done it against Skyline, Havasu and Coconino while Parker has done it against Wickenburg, Needles and Buckeye. Parker could easily by 3-0 right now, but Kingman needs to solve its turnover and penalty problems. Parker demonstrates much better execution and discipline, therefore I give the edge to Parker.
