Just when we all thought it was safe to go outside again after the power points issue during basketball, another potential problem is looming on the horizon.
A friend of mine alerted me to the following situation in D4 baseball which, in a nutshell, is as follows:
Hayden High School could end up getting a bye in the state tournament for being awarded bonus points for forfeits. They have two forfeits on the year and both were against Division III teams which gave them 10 extra bonus points.
Question: should a team be awarded those extra points because the forfeiting team is from a higher division?
The AIA has been alerted but with only one week left in regular season for D4, will they act in time before tournament seeding takes place?
Just a reminder that if you look at the power rankings on AIA365, some of Friday’s games have yet to be reported.
The argument is that forfeiture should not get a lower division team extra power points when a team in a higher division forfeits a game(s). While forfeiture is technically a victory it is not the same as defeating that other team by actually swinging a bat or throwing a pitch (or shooting free throws and kicking field goals for that matter).
It would appear that Valley Lutheran, Arizona Lutheran, and St. Johns could be affected in some way by this.
Issue? Non-issue? Any thoughts?
