I thought it might be interesting to look back on what 8man football looked like in AZ 20 years ago. 1992 was my senior year in high school. Wow how time flies...
The 1A North Conference and the 1A West always played each other in nonconference games. They also matched up in the 1st round of the playoffs. There were 4 conferences. West, North, and I think the other two were the South and East? Or South and Central. We never played the South or Central/East teams in the regular season, so my memory is a little fuzzy there. 2 teams from each conference made the playoffs for a total of 8 teams.
Fredonia - The Lynx were the defending state champs. The previous year, they tied Patagonia in the championship game and shared the state title. There was no overtime back then. Fredonia was led by running back Morgan Bingham. Bingham was a man amongst boys out there. To this day, probably one of the top 3 runningbacks I have ever seen at this level. The Lynx finished the regular season in a three way tie for 1st place in the north with Williams and Mogollon. They finished 2nd in the 3 way playoff and secured the #2 seed. Fredonia then lost to Mayer in the first round of the playoffs in 92 by a score of 44-40.
Mogollon - Mogollon was typical Mogollon. Small, fast, athletic, and hit like missles. they were led by Travis Williams at QB. They won the north before eventually falling to Arizona Lutheran in the state semis.
Williams - Williams was the AZ Republic preaseason #1 team. They finished tied with Fredonia and Mogollon as conference champs as Mogollon beat Fredonia, Fredonia beat Williams, and Williams beat Mogollon. But didnt make the playoffs as they were the odd man out in the miniplayoff that was played at Joseph City.
Joseph City - The early 90's were actually VERY down years for Joseph City. They were often mercy ruled by the top teams on a yearly basis.
Seligman - Seligman had a great group of seniors that won the state title in 1990. But in 1992, they didnt have much talent. They shared the bottom of the 1A north with JC.
Mayer - Won the 1A West by going undefeated in conference. Only regular season loss was a nonconference game at Fredonia in the season opener when they were missing 5 senior starters. Beat NWCC (who was ranked #1 that week) at home for homecoming in a thriller. Avenged week 1 loss to Fredonia by knocking off the defending co-champs in the quarterfinals. Lost to other defending champ Patagonia the next week in the state semis that were played at Phoenix Christian. Game with Patagonia was tied 20-20 going into the 4th quarter, before the Lobos exploded for 30 points in the 4th to blow the game wide open. (I still have nightmares)
Northwest Community Christian - Yes. It was called Northwest COMMUNITY Christian back then. The Crusaders were loaded athletically. They had 6-5 David Wahlstrom at QB. They ended the yr as the #2 seed from the West and lost in the 1st round of the playoffs.
Orme - This was Orme's only 2nd year of playing in 1A. They previously played in the 2A conference. Orme finished 3rd in the conference in 2012. It was a down year for them as they made the playoffs the previous season.
Bagdad - Bagdad was average in 92. They had some decent players, but not enough to be competitive with the top teams. Bagdad's QB that year was Kip Nunguster. Other names I remember from that team were Jeremy Mosley and Esteban Sandoval.
Salome - The Frogs were basement dwellars in 92. They did hit you though. I remember that much.
Arizona Lutheran - The Coyotes won their first and only state title in 1992. They were heads and shoulders above any other team that year. They mercy ruled Patagonia in the state title game. Running back Taylor Hendrick was a stud. And I dont remember the name of their QB, but he had a full beard. I still wanna see that guy's birth certificate.
Scottsdale Christian - SCA was a playoff team in 1992. They were led by sophomore QB Greg Davis. Who is now the head coach at Cactus Shadows. They lost in the 1st round of the playoffs.
Palo Verde Christian - Now named Pusch Ridge. In 1992, Palo Verde was a fairly new program and was not that competitive.
PDSD - Not very competetive in football in 1992.
Patagonia - Defending state co-champs. They were led by Coach Bill House. They had 2 very good running backs that year. Germain Montiel and Ricky Nord. Rolled all year until the loss to ALA in the title game.
Valley Union - I belive they might have been runner up in the South in 1992? I dont recall. But they were not up to par with the Valley Union power teams of the 1980s.
St. David - They were very average. Not up to par with typical teams from St. David.
Ft. Thomas - Dont remember much about them at all this year.
Clifton - Clifton had some GREAT basketball teams in the early 1990s. But their football teams were subpar.
