So, I didn't follow the 2A closely last year, but I see from last year's final rankings that Bourgade was in it then too. Did they do well all last year or did they make a run at the end of the season.
Bourgade was solid all of last year though their record was probably not as good as it had been for the previous couple of years. By the State tournament they were playing very good softball and beat one of the tournament favorites in Pusch Ridge Christian. They lost a heart breaker in the next round to Willcox, 1-0. The Lady Golden Eagles have two quality pitchers in Caty Jutson and Cece Kolesar. Jutson got most of the innings last year though, I believe. They lost 3 Seniors from last years team with Regan Ahl probably the toughest to replace but they are still very talented.
Last I heard was that Regan Ahl AND Tori Layton from Bourgade were on the Grand Canyon team this year. I just checked the Lady 'Lopes 2007 roster and they are both listed there. That is awesome.
As for PC for this year, you have hit the nail on the head about their pitching. Mossing graduated last year and she was their most effective pitcher. Tolmachoff looks to be the heir apparent this year and I'm not sure that she can lead the Lady Cougars to the same success that they have become accustomed too. There is still talent left on the PC squad with Burkhart, Conniff and company but replacing last years battery (Mossing and Furedy) is crucial for this years team.
I heard this week that SCA has a great set of new underclassmen that will add depth to an already strong core of girls. Purtzer and Petznick should return as a premier pitcher/catcher tandem, and with an infield ancored by returning players from last season, including Olp and Magruder, and an experienced outfield of Lougheed, Siefertson and Munsil to back them up, they wil be VERY tough.
Benson still has the Ellsworth/Batten Combo, but I don't know what they have to back them up.
NW should be tough this year as well, although they lost Wommer who is pitching at Point Loma University.
I think that Bourgade, PC and PCDS are rebuilding this year, but Valley, with Temple at the helm, could be a dark horse. I don't know much about that team, but I would be interested to know any information anybody might have.
I think the 2A metro conference is one of the toughest conferences out there. Bourgade did lose some strength in the defense in Ahl and Layton, both playing for Grand Canyon now, but they have a couple of freshman that can really perform. Jutson and Kolesar will be very tough on the mound this year. Their biggest challenge will be to keep their bats alive against the competition.
SCA, NW and Valley Christian will be big time competitors for the regional placements into state, but I am confident to say that those three teams and Bourgade will be at state to represent the Metro region.
Here are the Bourgade Catholic results from the Maricopa Tournament:
Bourgade vs. Tonopah - 12-0 Bourgade vs. Maricopa - 12-2 Bourgade vs. Barboquivira (?)forfeit - win to Bourgade Bourgade vs. Ray H.S - 9-0 Bourgade vs. Camp Verde - 12-1 Bourgade vs. Raymond Kellis - 3-1
The Lady Eagles did a very good job of playing with class and integrity. Offensive leaders were Monica Wilda (2 homeruns), Cecilia Kolesar, Cassie Pacheco and Caty Jutson. Cecilia Kolesar lead the defense on the mound, in four games. She was supported by freshmen pitchers Marissa Carbajal and Sandra Paz. The final game against Raymond Kellis was lead by junior Caty Jutson. She was outstanding on the mound against a very offensive team. Raymond Kellis is a new program, but most of their players play club ball, so although they didn't have strong chemistry with one another, the experience makeup of the team was strong. They were an offensively aggresive team, but Jutson moved the ball around, and they had a rough time connecting with her pitches.
