I stated on the other thread (D1-D3 Projections) that there were other problems in the AIA Volleyball Powerpoints database…there are. I was going to check “after the fact” to see if these problems made the tournament brackets released by the AIA wrong. But that isn’t really the right thing to do, and it’s a lot of work to check. So I went through the data base to find the major issues and their potential impact to playoff seeding so that the AIA can have a chance to “fix” them before the brackets are set tonight.
ALL of these problems are a result of the AIA’s decision this year to COUNT out-of-state-schools AND associate schools as part of the powerpoints formula. They didn’t do this last year. In previous years that they have done this, there have been problems but no one ever checked them…the couple sports I checked each year always always had problems. When I reported these problems to the AIA, they usually fixed them…but not always.
The AIA decision to include these out-of-state games in powerpoints calculations is very puzzling, since there is really NO advantage to counting them and so many disadvantages. Powerpoints is a math formula, and there is only ONE right answer. Including the out-of-state stuff will give the WRONG answer every time because the current policy is that it is up to the individual coaches/ADs to update out-of-state opponent results (or NOT as we have seen in most cases). The AIA has not properly trained the ADs in what their responsibilities are…not to mention the fact that it is very complicated and time consuming…please see posts in the other thread (latest D1-D3 Projections) for more details.
Here is the common thread with all these problems…failing to update an out-of-state opponents results usually does NOT always impact the ranking of the team who plays that out-of-state opponent (most of these teams are NOT in the playoff hunt). But, these failures do impact the rating (sometimes the ranking) of ALL their opponents (and sometimes their opponent’s opponents), some of whom are in the playoff hunt. These failures impact the tournament seeding. And, these failures will (maybe not volleyball this year) eventually impact whether or not a team even makes the playoffs. Powerpoints is a formula and shouldn’t be compromised by requiring individuals’ actions/ inactions/errors to manually update these out-of-state opponent results...it is far too error prone and there are no checks in the process.
Fixing these problems is now a dilemma. The rules state the games should be counted…so they probably should be and the OOS/Associate opponent results should fixed. However, it is tough to get these right and it is very late…the AIA should have addressed this earlier…I am pretty sure they knew there would be problems with it. Probably the best “wrong” at this point is to cancel these games (like they did yesterday for the Gila Ridge out-of-state games that I pointed out) EVEN though it is going to impact the placement of teams this year. It already has affected the rankings as was pointed out in the other thread NOTRE DAME / LAKE HAVASU / KOFA (see the latest D1-D3 Projections).
In any case, here are the problems I found that I think COULD impact PLAYOFF SEEDING this year. Also note, affecting the playoff seeding of one team WILL impact the seeding of the teams they displace as well, so the impact is NOT isolated to the teams highlighted below. I hope they get “fixed”:
D3 River Valley has a “counting” game with Needles (CA) whose results are missing. This could impact the playoff seeding for Lake Havasu (already impacted by Gila Ridge stuff) and Yuma Catholic.
D4 Morenci has a “counting” game with Cobre (NM) whose results are all missing. This could impact the playoff seeding for Thatcher, Wilcox, Safford, and Pima
D5 ASDB has a “counting” game with New Mexico School for Deaf & Blind whose results are all missing. This could impact playoff seeding for Tohono Oodham, St Augustine, and Greenfield
D5 St Michaels has a “counting” game with Navaho Mountain (NM) whose results are all missing. This could impact the playoff hopes/placement for Ganado.
D5 Rock Point still has 1 of 2 “counting” game against Monument Valley (UT) whose results are all missing. This could impact playoff seeding for Red Mesa.
D5 Fredonia has two “counting” games against Valley (UT) whose results are all missing. This could impact the playoff seeding for Ash Fork.
D5 Shonto Prep has a “counting” game against Navajo Mountain (NM) whose results are all missing. They also have two games that should not count but ARE being counted as games for the game divisor which gives all their opponents less points: Immanuel Mission, Red Valley Cove. This could impact the playoff seeding for Red Mesa.
