Mesa v. Horizon

Two late penalties help give Horizon a 24-20 win over Mesa on Thursday

This was the Fox Sports Arizona Thursday game of the week and Horizon and Mesa High did not disappoint as it took a late 4th quarter score for the Huslies to prevail 24-20.

The scoring got off to a quick start as both teams exchanged scores in the first two minutes of the game. The Jackrabbits scored on a 60 yard Marquis Pharrams run and on the Huskies' first play from scrimmage, recent North Dakota State commits, Ryan Stanford and Matt Jones, hooked up on an 80 yard pitch and catch. PAT was no good. 7-6 Mesa.

Horizon took the lead on a 32 yard field goal by Jett Stratford only to see Mesa answer on a 30 yard Jeremy Noble to Pharrams scoring pass. 14-9 Mesa.

Like Mesa, Horizon didn't back down and asnwered with a score of their own. Stanford hit Dushawn Brown deep to give the Huskies the ball at the 20 and later punched it in himself on a 5 yard run. Coach Casey decided to go for two and that was succesful as well as Stanford found Michael Glidden in the back of the endzone. 17-14 Horizon.

Mesa drove the field but missed a 30 yard field goal as time expired and Horizon took a 17-14 lead into the half.

The scoring of the first half did not carry over into the second as both defenses stepped their game up. Horizon had a chance to extend their lead but missed a 25 yard field goal. The Jackrabbits took the advantage in the 4th quarter when Noble found TE Tony Vaitafa on a pass over the middle to put Mesa at the 20 yard line. Noble raced in from 15 yards out to give his team a 20-17 lead after the PAT was blocked.

Horizon then used two roughing calls to get in the endzone and capture a 24-20 win. The first was a roughing the QB call after a big catch by Matt Jones. The second was after a successful field goal attempt to tie the game but Coach Casey elected to take the points off the board and take his chances with a 1st and Goal opportunity from the 4 yard line. It paid off as Jones plunged in from 2 yards away.

Tough hard-nosed football game by two quality teams. The two roughing calls, while legit, is what lost Mesa the game.
