Liberty v. Mingus

Liberty remains undefeated with a 34-20 win over Mingus on Cox 7 Thursday night

Great lineup for Thursday's Cox 7 game of the week featuring two of 4A2's top teams and the game looked like it was going to be a blow out early.

Liberty's Manny Noriega took the opening kickoff to the house from 90+ yards and with less than 30 seconds ticked off the clock, the Lions had a 7-0 lead.

A three and out by Mingus gave Liberty the ball back and it lead to another score with just 2 minutes and 20 seconds ticked off the clock, the Lions built a 13-0 lead. Junior QB Andre Gattie ran on from 7 yards away to build a 13-0 lead.

It appeared that the route was on but the Marauders scrapped back and this game got crazy with just a few minutes left on the clock.

Mingus got on the board for the first time, when James Long caught an 11 yard pass from Ronald Morones. 13-6.

Liberty went out and tried to get a quick score but the plan backfired. The Lions came out slinging the ball but Erick Quezada stepped in front of of Hattie's pass and tied the score up on at 20 with a long interception return for a TD. PAT was good and now the score is was tied up at 13 a peice with under 1 minute to play.

When most would have taken a knee, Coach Filleman decided he wanted to try and get some last minute points and he was successful. Hattie found Paul Pattattione in the endzone and took a 20-13 lead into the halp,.

The second half looked like w were about to witness an OK Corral type shootout as both teams opned with scores.

Mingus took the ball first and got a crucial score from Juan Gonzalez to knot it up at 20 a peiece.

But this was all the points Mingus could muster as Liberty scored twice in the second half to win the game 34-20 and remain undefeated.

These are two of the top teams in 4A2 and I expect both to make serious playoff runs. Anyone that talked about Liberty's schedule being soft, can now remain quiet. The Lions are the real deal. Mingus is at a serious disadvantage without star QB Nick Alred.

Game Ball
