The first ever meeting in the "Battle for Baseline" resulted in a 35-25 Fairfax win over Cesar Chavez.
Fairfax fumbled the ball away on their opening drive, giving Chavez great field position at the Fairfax 27 yard line. It took just a few plays for Kevin Broom to punch it in and give the Champions a 7-0 lead. In fact, it would be their only lead despite this game being tight for much of it.
Fairfax went to work on their next drive, playing smash mouth football. Brandon Jones for a 14 yard gain, Terryon Tate for a 27 yard gain. Tate got a 1st down on a 4th and short and Jones punched the ball in a few plays later to even the score at 7.
The teams exchanged turnovers and the next score happened on a surprising deep TD pass by Fairfax. Tahj Brewer ran in from 54 yards out. 14-7.
Chavez answered quickly. A 61 yard run by D.J. Stafford put the ball at the 2 and Broom added his second score of the night. Chavez went for two but Fairfax DE Anthony Arledge came up with a huge stop. 14-13.
Fairfax added one more score before the half. They made it 21-13 on an 11 yard TD run by DeMario Fair.
Chavez came out swinging in th second half. Taking the ball down and scoring quickly. Chandler Hovik hit Jaylyn Shans for a 38 yard gain and a roughing the pass call put the ball inside the 10. Stafford scored and the 2 point conversion was again no good to cut the lead to 21-19.
Fairfax's next drive was the key moment in the game in my opinion. They went on a 19 play, 65 yard, 9 minute drive that ate the entire 3rd quarter. Tate capped the drive with a short TD. 28-19.
The Stampede defsne forced a punt and the offense went right back to work. Tate scored again with 6 minutes left in the game to build the lead to 35-19.
Chavez would score with a few minutes to play but it would be too little too late.
Good game, heated rivalry for two schools that have never played. Both teams have some talent. But when Fairfax went unbalanced, Chavez never really adjusted, leaving a huge bubble for the Stampede to run at, which they did...over and over and over. But for Fairfax to make any run if they make the playoffs, the must establish some sort of passing attack.
Fairfax RB Terryon Tate had 198 yards rushing but I am going to give the game ball to the Hogs upfront at Fairfax. Didn't matter if it was Tate or Brandon Jones, the holes were there. Two back breaking long scoring drives in the second half were the key to this win.
