Cienega v. Chaparral

Chaparral wins third straight title behind three Davonte' Neal scores

After a slow start, Chaparral had a strong second half to win their third straight state title.

It was Cienega that actually took an early lead. The first quarter was scoreless and it would be the Bobcats that would strike first. A big hit on Chaparral star Davonte' Neal by Cienega's Brandon Bulgrin on a punt return forced a fumble that was recovered by David Pierce inside the 5. Jalen Rogers scored a few plays later and gave Cienega their only lead of the game. 7-0.

Neal made up for the error with two TDs in less than 5 minutes of play to end the 1st half. 13 seconds after Cienega scored, Neal knotted the game at 7 with an 80 yard TD run. Chaparral forced a punt and Connor Brewer hit Neal on two straight passes, the latter for a 25 yard TD. Chaparral up 14-7 at the half.

Neal started the second half just like he ended the first, scoring on a 42 yard TD run and the game now seemed easily in Chaparral's control. 21-7.

Chaparral scored two more times in the 3rd quarter and the teams exchanged scores in the 4th to give us a final of 37-14.

Chaparral got TDs from Dylan Cozens on a fumble recovery and on a Brewer to Jake Roh pass. Dylan Audsley made a FG in the 3rd.

Cienega's Michael Archie scampered in for the Bobcats in the 4th.

I will give it to Cienega, they played tough for much of the first half. Many thought it was going to be a blowout and to their surprise, Chaparral had just a 14-7 lead headed into halftime...and those two scores came past the 5 minute mark in the 2nd quarter.

Chaparral came out and wore the Bobcats down with their athletes and speed.

Game Ball

Easy pick is Chaparral athlete Davonte' Neal. He capped off a good high school career with a 3 TD performance.
