The Arizona high school football season officialy kicked off Saturday at 3 PM with Blue Ridge facing Moapa Valley from Nevada in the 7th annual Barry Sollenberger Kickoff Classic.

The Yellow Jackets brought the trophy bac to Arizona with a 23-14 win.

In typical opening game fashion, the 1st quarter was a bit slow and suggish with neither team able to get much going. Blue Ridge struck first, scring on a 70 yard TD pass from Skyler Hill to Ben Watson with one minute left in the 1st quarter to give the Yellow Jackets a 7-0 lead.

Mapa Valley answered right backbehind strong running from Conner Mortensen, who would score from one yard out. MV completed a two-point conversion and took an 8-7 lead, their only lead of the game.

Watson scored his second TD of the night in the second quarter on a 20 yard interception returned to the house. This gave Blue Ridge a 14-8 lead headed into halftime.

The third quarter was all Blue Ridge. They scored 9 points to build a 23-8 lead. Bradley Syth rumbled in for a score and Cody McBride kicked a field goal to all but put the nail in the coffin.

Moapa Valley scored on a Sean McConnell punt return as time expired to give the fans a final of 23-14.

Good early win for the defending D4 state champs Blue Ridge. Moapa Valley beat a very good Show Low team in this game last year. Blue Ridge has some wrinkles to iron out but should contend for the title again.

Game Ball

Easy pick here. Blue Ridge WR/DB Ben Watson scored 2 TDs, one on a long reception and another on an INT return. He also recorded another INT in the game and was big in the return game.
