Big Win for Liberty

Two of division three's top teams faced off on the Cox 7 Thursday game of the week

First, let's all say a quick prayer for Jordan Brown and his family. The junior WR from Paradise Valley was taken off the field in an ambulance. We all hope all is well with you JB.

Now to the game...

This was an offensive explosion. Both teams came out blazing and we wound up with a 24-24 tie at the half, only to see Liberty run away with the game in the second half. The Lions outscored PV 41 to 7 in the second half.

There was a lot of hype regarding the two QBs, Tyler Rogers and Ryan Finley and they did not disappoint.

The two teams traded scores and then turnovers on each of their first two drives to knot the score at 7 in the 1st.

Finley hit Bailey Thompson on a screen and big left tackle Patrick Johnson had a crushing block to get PV in the redzone. A little trickery gave the Trojans their next score. They motioned Finley into the flats and Trent Gavelek found the Boise State commit for a score to out PV up 14-7.

Rogers took Liberty down the field in a hurry and matched the score, hooking up with Brandon Murphy to tie it again.

PV kicked a field goal, forced a punt and then scored on a Finley to Jordan Brown TD to go up 24-14 midway through the second.

But Liberty would score 10 straight points to end the half tied at 24 a piece.

Kyle Harms scored on a 31 yard run and with a minute to go in the half, Rogers marched the Lions down the field and Tyler Wyatt kicked a 38 yard field goal.

The second half started much like the first as both teams traded scores but after Rogers scored on a 31 yard run to put Liberty up 38-31, the Lions blocked a punt and intercepted a Finley pass that both led to scores and now a three touchdown lead.

Two punt returns for TDs in the 4th for Liberty put this game away and gave us a final of 65-31 in favor of Liberty.

These are two good teams. The teams played pretty much even despite the score when you look at the stats. yardage, turnovers; it wasn't as lopsided as the score would indicate. Two turnovers late led to Liberty scores and then the Lions scored on two punt returns to blow this game wide open.

Game Ball

A lot went right for Liberty, tough to give one game ball. Tyler Rogers was excellent. Got to give props to the punt return unit for scoring twice.
