Apollo scored 43 unanswered points in the second half to cruise to a 53-7 victory over Ironwood on Friday night.
Both teams entered the game on two game win streaks and ranked in the top 15 in division-two and up until halftime, it looked like it would be a slugfest until the end.
Apollo scored on The Opening drive when Jordan Gungi hit Braxton Nickerson on a 37 yard scoring strike.
Later in the second quarter, Ironwood's Anthony Urias rumbled 60 yards to get the Eagles into scoring range. A fumbe recovery by Dylan Lebanc gave Ironwood their first score.
A 21 yard field goal by Rodrigo Hernandez gave Apollo a 10-7 lead headed into halftime.
Despite a tight first half, Apollo scored 21 unanswered points in the third quarter to blow this game wide open.
Gungi hit Justin Bishop and Abe Mendivil for TDs in the 3rd and Mendivil ran 17 yards for another score to build a 31-7 lead headed into the 4th.
The Hawks would score 22 points in the 4th to give us a final of 53-7.
I think Apollo showed that they are the real deal. They face an even better opponent next week in Centennial. The Hawks have good size, run the ball well and showed they can still pass the ball without Jon Brown.
Ironwood was without Michael Alexander but without a passing attack, teams will just stack the box on them.
Going to go with the Hawk defense. They held a team that was averaging over 50 points a game to 7.
