These two teams are about ball control but turnovers prevented both Highland and Mesa form putting points on the board and a turnover is how this game would end.
The first quarter was scoreless as Highland had a chance for 3 but missed a 42 yard field goal. Another mishap on special teams late in the 1st quarter by Highland led to Mesa's only points of the night.
Mesa punted the ball away but the punt was muffed and Jacob Sosa of Mesa recovered the ball, giving the Jackrabbits the ball at the 33 yard line. Kicker Noe Pereles' 43 yard field goal gave Mesa a 3-0 lead in the 2nd quarter.
Highland, who ran the ball over 40 times in their week 1 loss to Queen Creek, had some success in the air as QB Blake Young found TEs Dusty Cook, Colin Gardner and WR Jake Brown for first downs late in the 1st half. Back to the ground, RB Ryan McCord ran in from the 1 yard line to give Highland a 7-3 lead with under 2 minutes in the half.
This would remain the score to the end as both teams had chances to score but turnovers prevented both from doing so. Mesa threw 2 INTs, one with under 2 minutes left in the game, and Highland fumbled the ball after returning a punt to the 15 yard line.
Final Highland 7 Mesa 3
Both teams opened their offense up a bit as compared to week 1 but this was a defensive battle. Both teams had chances to either extend or take the lead but turnovers kept this game low scoring.
Highland RB Ryan McCord rushed for 62 yards and scored the game's only TD.
