It was an emotional night as Saguaro mourned the recent death of their equipment manager Mike Tug Garcia and the Sabercats did their best to honor the man with a 35-28 victory over Queen Creek on Friday night.
Queen Creek opened the game with an 8 minute drive, methodically marching down the field, eventually scoring on a Weston Barlow run to take a 7-0 lead.
It took Saguaro just 2 minutes to answer and tie the score. Luke Rubenzer hit WR J.T. Nettleton on a screen pass for their first of two TDs on the night.
Nettleton came up huge again in the second quarter intercepting a pass. Saguaro capitalized when Rubenzer ran in from a few yards out. 14-7.
A personal foul gave Queen Creek the ball on the 50 after the kickoff and the Bulldogs got into the redone on a Bryce Dobbs to Mike Kemmerer 30 yard pass. Trey Lemley scored to knot it at 14.
Saguaro would score twice before the half ended, the first on an Isaiah Reece TD run and the second on a Rubenzer to Cameron Koutsalas TD pass with under 1 minute to play in the half.
28-14 at halftime.
Queen Creek kept the game interesting, scoring on the first possession of the half to get within one score. Dobbs ran it in himself to cap the drive and make the score 28-21.
But Rubenzer and Nettleton were too much to handle hooking up again in the 3rd quarter.
Semone Brown scored on a draw play for Queen Creek but the onside kick was recovered by Saguaro and the Sabercats ran out the clock.
Final: Saguaro 35 Queen Creek 28
If you were just looking at lineups, you wouldn't think Queen Creek could compete but they are well coached, run the football extremely well and are scrappy. Saguaro is loaded with athletes and are legit contenders for the D3 state title. Penalties were off the charts tonight. Saguaro's TD just before the end of the first half turned out to be very very crucial in the end.
Saguaro WR J.T. Nettleton. He had 2 TD grabs and several crucial catches that kept drives alive. Rubenzer was very good as well. He threw 3 TDs and ran one in.
Saguaro Outlasts Queen Creek
