The teams traded scores in the 1st quarter with Thunderbird striking first on a B.J. Pelt run and Washington on a James Rasmussen to Markus Montelongo pass.
The Rams would dominate the 2nd quarter building a 13 point lead on another Rasmussen to Montelongo connection. Rasmussen led WHS on a 6 minute scoring drive and punched in the score himself. 20-7 WHS.
With time still on the clock Thunderbird put together a drive that would have huge ramifications on the outcome. After converting on a fake punt Tbird QB Jake Glatting connected with Kaleb Hofer on a 31 yard score to cut the lead to 20-13 headed into halftime.
The teams traded punts to start the 2nd half but pulled ahead on a 66 yard Antwain Marlowe TD run. 27-13.
But it was Thunderbird that would control the rest of the game and come out on top.
The Chiefs scored again on a Glatting to Hofer TD pass and then on the ensuing kickoff, WHS fumbled the return and Thunderbird recovered at the 15 yard line. A few seconds later Tbird punched it in to tie the score.
With the momentum clearly with Thunderbird, their defense forced a punt and the offense went right back to work with Glatting hitting Mason Hosttetter on a pass that put them on the 5. RB Darren Dorsey scored from a few yards out, giving Thunderbird the lead at 34-27.
Washington ended up with two more tries to tie the game up but the Thunderbird defense forced two turnovers on downs.
Final 34-27 Thunderbird over Washington.
These are two very solid football teams that I think will make the playoffs. Are they state title contenders? Not likely, but both can score and are balanced on offense. The Thunderbird defense came up huge in the 4th quarter stopping Washington twice at the end of the game.
Thunderbird QB Jake Glatting threw 3 TD passes.
