Aztecs Down the Thunder

Big first quarter fuels Corona to an upset over Desert Vista

I am sure Desert Vista didn't expect to be down 21-0 in the first quarter but that is exactly what happened.

Corona marched down the field on the opening drive and scored on a George Wright TD run, converting a fake punt along the way on an Elijah Hassell run.

Hassell then intercepted Desert Vista QB Alex farina on the Thunder's first offensive play. The Azetcs turned that into points on a R.J. Rhiner to Cassius Peat TD pass.

Desert Vista then fumbled the kickoff and a few plays later Corona RB Colin Freeland would run in and just like that, Corona del Sol was up 21-0 on visiting Desert Vista.

The lead would be too much for Desert Vista to overcome. Corona kicker Chris Baker made two FGs in the first half while DV got on the board on a 68 yard Farina to Jason King scoring pass to make the score 27-7 at halftime.

Desert Vista tried valiantly in the second half but was never able to come closer then 12 points down.

The teams traded scores to open the 2nd half and DV looked like the got some momentum, getting two points off a safety and then driving the field and scoring to make the score 34-22. But Corona went on a 7 minute scoring drive that all but put the nail in the coffin. Rhiner's QB sneak late in the 4th put the game out of reach at 41-22.

DV would score one last time to give us a final of 41-28.

Take away the 21 points Desert Vista spotted Corona and Corona still outplayed the Thunder. The Aztec offensive line did a great job and were able to get enough push that any time Corona ran the ball, they were going to get at least five yards.

Credit Corona's offensive line as well but RB George Wright was great last night. He didn't go down on first contact, rushing for nearly 200 yards.
