Game Recap: Gilbert vs. Mesquite

Gilbert rolls to a 27-14 win over Mesquite on the Cox 7 game of the week

Recap

Gilbert jumped out to a 20-0 lead at halftime against Mesquite on the Cox 7 game of the week and never looked back, rolling to a 27-14 win in week 1 action.

The Gilbert defense forced a punt on Mesquite's opening drive and the offense went to work on their opening drive of 2014.

Adam Kochheiser gave the offense great field position, at the Mesquite 45, and QB Nick Nezami hit try Colbert twice on the drive including a short pass for a score to put the Tigers up 6-0.

After Mesquite's third punt in as many possessions, Nezami found WR Rico Yanez on a 25 yard TD pass that pushed the lead to 13-0 in the 2nd quarter.

Mesquite LB Nick Young, intercepted Nezami but the Wildcats gave the ball right back, fumbling inside the 10 with Gilbert LB Chase Cahalan recovering. One play later, Nezami found Jamian Maes in the flats for his 3rd TD pass of the night.

Mesquite drove the ball at the end of the half and attempted a FG but it was blocked.

20-0 Gilbert at the half.

Gilbert built a 27-0 lead in the 4th quarter after a Mario Meza run.

Mesquite was able to get two fourth quarter scores, an Austin Brice QB sneak and a Ryne Miller pick 6, but it was too little too late.

Final- Gilbert 27 Mesquite 14

Bottomline

Gilbert was better in every facet of the game tonight. They won the turnover battle (Mesquite had 4), their defense stymied Mesquite's offense and they had much better field position throughout the game. I think Gilbert is a little better then everyone expected and Mesquite needs to grow up and replace those 33 seniors in a hurry.

Game Ball

Gilbert QB Nick Nezami threw for 214 yards and 3 TDs.
