Game Recap Centennial v. Brophy

Centennial prevails 24-14 over Brophy in a defensive battle

Two teams hungry for a win came and it slugged it out in an old school defensive battle.

You could tell very early on what kind of game this would be. Brophy got the ball first but never got things going and QB Cade Knox was sacked by Micah Navarette to force a punt.

Centennial marched the field but was stuffed on 4th and 1 and turned the ball over on downs.

Brophy turned around and gave the ball back as Knox threw an INT to Jacob Holly. He returned it to the 25 and the Coyotes capitalized with a 41 yard Joe Navarro field goal. After one quarter, Centennial led 3-0.

It would be Brophy who would score next after a turnover. Their defense forced a fumble, recovered it and  one play later Knox found WR Isaiah Oliver in the end zone on a 45 yard TD strike. Brophy took the lead 7-3 but it would be their only lead of the game.

Centennial got a great return from David McGriff, setting the drive up at the 45 yard line. QB Isaac Steele converted a 4th and 5 play with an 11 yard run and then Dedrick Young rumbled 15 yards. A personal foul moved the ball inside the 10 and Young scored from a few yards out to give the Coyotes the lead back 10-7.

10-7 at the half.

Centennial made a statement on their opening drive of the 2nd half, going on a 5 minute drive that put them up 17-7. Steele made some nice runs to gain 1st downs and showed his passing ability, hitting Marcel Perez for a gain of 15 yards and Marcus Wakeham for a 15 yard TD.

Brophy didn't panic. They got into a two tight end set and started feeding their horse, RB Ryan Velez. Velez had several nicer runs on the drive, which opened up the passing game for Knox. The junior QB hit 6-3 sophomore Robert Brooks to cut the lead to 17-14 with 10 minutes left to play.

Centennial drove the field but missed a field goal. The teams exchanged punts and with 2 minutes to go, Brophy had the ball with the chance to win. Navarette sacked Knox, turning the ball over on downs. Centennial got the ball at the 10 yard line and Steele scored with under 1 minutes to go.

Final Centennial 24, Brophy 14

Old school game. These two teams can run the football and both play good defense. Centennial had much more success early running the ball, having a 210-18 yard rushing edge at one point. Both had penalties in crucial times that hurt and both need to get better at throwing the ball. Centennial got a much needed win to move to 1-2 while Brophy falls to 1-3. Both teams's schedules have been brutal thus far.
