What more can you ask for? A sell out crowd, a high scoring game from the top two ranked teams in the state that came down to the wire, a helicopter landing, and a game filled with college coaches. This game lived up to the hype.
After the first half, I didn't know if I was at a track meet or a football game.
Chandler fumbled the first play from scrimmage and Mt. Pointe LB Keondre Churchwell recovered inside the 20. Brandyn Leonard punched it in from a few yards out and Mt. Pointe took an early 7-0 lead.
Chandler turned the ball over n their next drive. This time sophomore safety Isaiah Pola-Mao picked off Bryce Perkins and returned it to the 29 yard line. Leonard again punched it in and the Pride pushed the lead to 13-0.
Chandler finally got on the board with a 40 yard Perkins to Justin Jan scoring pass late in the 1st. But Mt. Pointe was quick to answer with a third Leonard TD. 20-7...and that was just the end of the 1st quarter.
The Wolves cut it to 20-14 on another Perkins to Jan TD pass. Mt. Pointe fumbled the kickoff Chandler's Isaiah Twellman recovered and it looked like Chandler might take the lead in the game. But Mt. Pointe's defense held and Chandler turned the ball over on downs.
The track meet continued and Leonard scored again, this time from 38 yards out. 27-14.
Chandler answered right away on a 71 yard Chase Lucas TD run. 27-21.
Paul Lucas came right back with a 44 yard TD run of his own followed by a successful 2 point conversion. 35-21.
A third Chandler turnover led to more points for Mt. Pointe. Again it was Lucas. This time scoring on a 64 yard run. 42-21.
But Chase answered right back with a 99 yard kick off return TD. 42-28.
Mt. Pointe missed a FG at the end of the half and this marathon first half was finally over.
The Pride chewed up 6 minutes of clock on their first drive of the second half but came away with no points, missing another field goal.
Bryce Perkins gave Chandler some life on a 17 yard scoring pass to Micah Reed-Campos, who was filling in for Chase Lucas who missed the 2nd half. 42-35.
Mt. Pointe went right back to the ground, eating more clock, this time scoring on a 37 yard John Abercrombie FG. 45-35 after 3 quarters.
Chandler cut the lead to 45-42 with 5 minutes left in the game on a Perkins to N'Keal Harry TD pass but didn't get the ball back until 22 seconds were left on the clock.
Paul Lucas converted a 4th and 3 and a defensive holding gave Mt. Pointe the ball back after Chandler intercepted Garvin Alston. Lucas had a late TD called back for holding and the Pride ended up turning the ball over on downs. But with 22 ticks left on the clock and needing to travel 91 yards it was too little too late.
Final Mt. Pointe 45, Chandler 42
Great game, two great teams. Both of these teams are title contenders. Chandler can't turn the ball over 3 times and expect to beat Mt. Pointe. Both proved they can score, there were zero punts in this game.
Paul Lucas set a school record with 244 yards and scored 2 TDs. Brandyn Leonard scored 4 times and the Pride OL paved the way for 542 yards rushing.
