Moon Valley won the toss and didn't waste time. They got on the board first on a Shannon Burton to Nick Carlon TD pass. Two-point play was good. 8-0 Rockets. Let it be noted that Moon Valley did not attempt a PAT or FG all night.
The Moon Valley defense forced a punt and again the Rockets went down the field and got in scoring position. A nice run by Burton gave Moon Valley 1st and goal at the 1. But it was the Tempe defense that showed up and forced a turnover on downs, huge in the outcome of this game.
A Tempe punt and another Moon Valley drive in scoring range led to zero points as again the Rockets turned the ball over on downs.
The Buffaloes turned around and did the exact same thing, marched the field and turned the ball over on downs at the 2 yard line.
Moon Valley then committed their first costly mistake of the game. A fumble in the endzone was recovered by Tempe. PAT was blocked. 8-6 Moon.
Moon Valley then made their second mistake in the closing minute of the 1st half. They fumbled the ball away again, this time at the 33 yard line. Senior RB Davonte Dorsey got the ball to the 1 and QB Emanuel Gant plowed in for the final yard a play later. After the two-point play, Tempe had a 14-8 lead at the half.
Tempe took a different approach in the second half. They relied on a bigger offense line and ran the ball right at the Moon Valley defense. The Buffs marched right down the field and pushed the lead to 21-8 on a Dorsey TD run.
Moon Valley turned the ball over on downs again and Tempe made the most of it as Gant hit Bilal Muhammad to extend the lead to 28-8.
Moon Valley still had some fight in them. They converted a fake punt and Burton found Brett Voss in the endzone to cut the lead to 28-14 as the third quarter ended.
Tempe started the 4th quarter with a FG by Alex Gomez. 31-14.
Moon Valley then got the ball inside the 10 yard line and came away with no points. On 4th and goal at the 2, the Rockets fumbled the ball on a double reverse that had a chance to score.
A Tempe punt out of their own endzone gave Moon Valley good field position and the Rockets scored on another Burton to Voss pass to make it 31-20 with 5 minutes left.
After a failed onside kick attempt by MV, Tempe drove the field and put the nail in the coffin on a short Treyveone Reed TD run. 38-20.
Moon Valley scored with under a minute to go to give us a final of 38-26.
Tempe proved to be the more physical team tonight. They won the section and deserved the win. Moon Valley had their chances but turnovers were costly.
Going to give it to the Tempe Defense. They came up with huge 4th down stops and forced some big time turnovers.
