Saguaro wins second straight state title with big second half

Breakdown

Most people didn't give Williams Field a chance in this game, considering the fact that Saguaro won in the regular season 42-7. Williams Field came out swinging and had Saguaro fans sweating, at least for the first half.

The Black Hawks took an early lead on an Austin Holmes pick six.

Saguaro responded to tie the game at 7. Kare Lyles hit junior Byron Murphy then Lyles scrambled to the 36. With the ball at the 35, Lyles hit Christian Kirk on a 4th and 9 pass to put the ball at the 5 yard line. Kirk ran it in to knot the score.

Williams Field was able to move the ball into scoring range but stalled and attempted a field goal. Blake Ruiz's kick was blocked by Kirk and recovered by Murphy at the 49 yard line. Lyles then went deep to Murphy, who came up with a nice one-handed TD grab. 14-7 Sabercats.

Saguaro's defense forced a punt and Lyles again went deep on another scoring strike. This time Lyles hit sophomore Robert Branch from 50 yards out. 21-7.

Williams Field kept fighting. Braedyn Bushman rumbled to the 43 yard line and a 15 yard flag was tacked on to the run. Bushman added a 31 yard run, putting the ball at the 7. Fabian Ortiz ran the ball in for the final 7 yards and kept WF within one score.

Kirk had a rare fumble for Saguaro and Bushman capitalized on a TD run. 21-21.

Kirk quickly made up for his blunder, returning the kickoff for a score.

Saguaro got the ball to start the second half and went right back to work. Lyles found Cameron Koutsalas on a deep ball to the 10 and Kirk finished the drive on a TD run, his third score of the night. 35-21.

Williams Field was never able to generate much offense in the third quarter, punting twice. Saguaro added a field goal and Kirk scored a TD in the 4th quarter.

Bottomline

Saguaro started the year as the favorite and never gave up the top spot. They are a talented group. Williams Field gave them the biggest challenge they faced all year in the first half but the Saguaro defense came up big in the second half.

Surprise surprise. Christian Kirk from Saguaro gets the game ball. He scored 4 times and broke the state record for career TDs. Kirk will go down as one of the best players in state history.
