Pinnacle uses late field goal to beat Brophy

Pinnacle uses late field goal to beat Brophy

Breakdown

Brophy go the ball first and made it look easy, scoring quickly on a Cade Knox to Noah Pettinger screen pass that put the Broncos up 7-0.

Their defense forced a punt and the offense went right back to work, marching the field and getting in the redzone. Knox was picked off by Pinnacle DB Dylan Stevenson and their offense went to work.

Pinnacle put together a nice drive that was capped off on a Spencer Rattler TD run. PAT was no good, Brophy up 7-6 early in the 2nd quarter.

Knox was picked off again on the very next Brophy possession and the Pioneers got points out of the turnover again. This time Jeff McGuire connected on a 23 yard field goal. 9-7.

Brophy's offense again had success moving the ball but stalled and ended up missing a 51 yard field goal.

Brophy's Dante Diaz-Infante came up huge, blocking a Pinnacle punt and giving their offense the ball at the 13 yard line with 41 seconds left in the 1st half. Brophy capitalized, scoring on a Ryan Velez run to take a 14-9 lead into halftime.

Pinnacle went to the ground game to start the second half, bruising their way into Brophy territory. Rattler then hit Dalton Cash on a short pass that Cash took in for the score. Pinnacle took the lead back 16-14.

Just when it looked like Pinnacle had the momentum, it switched right back to Brophy. After converting on a fake punt, Pinnacle fumbled the ball and Brophy's Jimmy Hawkins scooped and scored, putting Brophy back on top. Momentarily.

Down 21-16, Rattler hooked up with Cash again for a score, the two-point attempt failed and Pinnacle took a 22-21 lead. Momentarily.

Brophy's Ryan Velez took the kick off back for a score and Brophy took the lead back 28-22 headed into the 4th quarter.

Briophys defense forced a punt and their offense drove the field and kicked a field goal that put the Broncos up two scores with 6 minutes to play.

Freshman quarterback Spencer Rattler didn't flinch. He hit senior TE Josh Stedman for a touchdown pass that got Pinnacle back within two points with 4 minutes to play. 31-29.

Pinnacle's defense then forced a three-and-out and after the punt, Pinnacle had the ball at the 33 yard line with two and a half minutes to play.

A face mask penalty moved the chains, as did a Rattler to Stedman pass. Things looked bleak for Pinnacle as Brophy DE Connor Murphy made a TFL on 3rd down, forcing a 4th and 8 from the 29 yard line. Pinnacle head coach Dana Zupke elected to try the long field goal. The 46 yarder by McGuire was good. 40 seconds left and Pinnacle took the lead back 32-31.

Brophy would have to go 90+ yards in 34 seconds. They made it interesting, getting the ball to midfield on a hook and ladder play but that is as far as the Broncos would get.

Final: Pinnacle 32, Brophy 31

Bottomline

This was the best game I have seen this year, super exciting. The whole game went back and forth and had a great ending. Credit Pinnacle for overcoming multiple special teams errors to win this game.

Game Ball

Have to go with Pinnacle kicker Jeff McGuire. A 46 yard field goal is not a sure thing at any level. Hitting that kick to win the game won the game for Pinnacle.
