The stage was set. Two rival teams, both ranked in the Top 5, playing in front of a sell out crowd on the Thursday night game of the week. This one didn't disappoint either as it took a strong 4th quarter from Mt. Pointe to pull away from Desert Vista 28-14.
The two teams exchanged punts and it was Mt. Pointe that struck first when RB Macarius Blount ran in from 11 yards out.
Desert Vista answered quickly. Nick Young hit Raymond Figueroa on a 57 yard bomb to knot the score at 7.
After exchanging punts again, Mt. Pointe went on an 8 play, 80 yard drive to take the lead. QB Jack Smith had several nice runs to keep the drive alive and then hooked up with Ralph Roman to put the Pride up 14-7.
Kenny Churchwell intercepted Alex Farina and Mt. Pointe took a 14-7 lead into halftime.
The second half started exactly like the 1st. The teams exchanged punts and this time it was Desert Vista that scored. Junior RB Lelon Dillard charged in from a yard out to tie the score at 14. The TD was set up on a Nick Young to Keishaud White 35 yard pass.
Mt. Pointe responded with another long scoring drive. This time Smith hit Deon Lee in the flats for a score. 21-14 Pride in the 4th.
Two Mt. Pointe interceptions in the 4th quarter, one by Churchwell and another by Isaiah Butler, ended any hopes of a Desert Vista come back.
Smith ran another score in late in the 4th to give us a final of 28-14, Mt. Pointe victory.
Good game and these two teams like to run the football. But Desert Vista had 3 turnovers and Mt. Pointe didn't have one. It's tough to win ball games like that.
Mt. Pointe QB Jack Smith accounted for 3 Pride scores.
