Spotlighting the best games in Arizona high school football

A couple of huge games in Division-one highlight this week's match ups

Games of the Week

I usually only do one but couldn't this week as both the Mountain Pointe at Desert Ridge and Chaparral at Centennial games are huge!

* Mountain Pointe at Desert Ridge

Both teams like to run the football and Mt. Pointe's go to guy is senior Macarius Blount. He could go over the 1,000 yard mark in this game. Will the Pride be able to block massive defensive tackle D.J. Davidson? Desert Ridge pounds the football with 5-9, 190 pound Jathan Tenorio who has rushed for 775 yards.

* Chaparral at Centennial

This will be a defensive battle. Chaparral head coach Conrad Hamilton doubles as the defensive coordinator and has done a great job over the years. The bring a lot of pressure out of their odd front that causes confusion. Defensive end Brandon Jamison is a force off the edge and safety Kurt Shughart not only makes plays in the secondary but is a physical force in the run game. Long time Centennial DC Andrew Taylor always has his team's ready and this year they have a physical group led by LB Bozton Sanders. Isaac Steele is a lock down corner and DLs Randy Rodriguez and Chris Jules cause all sorts of havoc.

Games I will be at

* Boulder Creek at Pinnacle (Thurs)

Boulder Creek is looking for the first win of the season. Their leader on offense is QB Gunther Johnson who is in his fourth season as BC's starter under center. Pinnacle starts freshman Spencer Rattler, who has looked great in his very early career. He is protected by a good and very under-rated offensive line led by Kent Cullumber.

* Saguaro at Desert Mountain

In his first year coaching at Desert Mountain, Mike Morrissey has the Wolves out to a 5-1 start. They are a pass first team led by the junior tandem of QB Austin Nuessle and WR Kade Warner. Can DM's defense slow down an absolutely loaded Saguaro offense? The Sabercats lost two games early to division-one opponents Centennial and Pinancle but have since won three straight. WR Byron Murphy leads the state in receving yards and likely will be defending Warner.
