You could tell from the beginning that this game was going to be a defensive battle. The first quarter was filled with three-and-outs and punts. Marcos was able to get one drive together in the 1at quarter and scored the only points on a Shaun Richards TD run.
In the 2nd quarter, the two teams put together drives and both ended in missed field goals.
Marcos was able to extend their lead to 14-0, scoring with 40 seconds left in the half. Junior QB Naz Greer hit Montre Williams for a score.
14-0 Marcos at the half.
Corona showed life at the start of the 2nd half, putting together their best drive of the night. QB Austin Freese found Jamaree Johnson for th score to make it 14-7.
But that would be the only points put up by either team in the 3rd quarter.
The defensive battle continued in the 4th. More punts, more three-and-outs and a 4th and short stuff by the Marcos defense kept this game close.
After a bad punt, Corona got great field position at the Marcos 30 yard line and was able to turn the opportunity into points. The Aztecs converted on 4th and 2 and marched their way into 1st and goal at the 7 yard line. Austin Freese then found Dylan Freese in the corner of the endzone to pull Corona within one point.
On the PAT, Marcos was offsides and Corona head coach Corey Nenaber elected to go for two. Cameron Brice rumbled in and and gave the Aztecs their first lead of the game 15-14 with 2 minutes left to play.
That was short lived though.
Marcos returned the ball to the 39 yard line and on the first play, Greer found Avery Sanders on an intermediate route and Sanders arced 61 yards to the house. Greer then connected with Williams on the two-point play and just like that, Marcos had the lead again.
Corona got the ball back with 1:48 to play but only managed one first down and the game ended when Marcos LB Jacob Hernandez intercepted Freese on 4th and 15.
Final: Marocs de Niza 22 Corona del Sol 15
This was a great game and what high school football is all about. Old time rivals, sold out crowd and a nail biter of a game.
Just seconds after Corona took their first lead of the game, Marcos' Avery Sanders took a Naz Greer 61 yards for the game winning score.
