Sunrise Mountain cruises to win over Cactus, wins region title

Breakdown

What was supposed to be a close game between two rivals, got lopsided rather quickly, as Sunrise Mountain beat Cactus 63-13 on Friday night to cruise to the section title and an undefeated regular season

The Cactus offense as stopped on downs twice and went three-and-out once in the first quarter while Sunrise was able to get three scores and build a 22-0 first quarter lead.

RB Garrett Veldhuizen scored first while Chase Cord threw TDs passes to Chris Mullany and Bryce Utter.

Cord threw two more TD passes, giving Sunrise Mountain a 36-0 lead before the Cobras got on the scoreboard. Cactus QB Preston Guerra actually caught his own pass after a tipped ball and ran in for a score. 36-7.

Before the half was over, Sunrise got two scores from Nathan Florez, one on a pass from Cord another on a kick off return. Cactus WR Matt Eberhardt ran in a score for the Cobras before the 1st half expired but it was too little too late. Sunrise built a 50-13 lead by halftime.

There was a running clock in the 2nd half and Sunrise added two field goals from J.J. Nash and another Cord to Florez TD pass.

Final: Sunrise 63 Cactus 13

Bottomline

Sunrise Mountain was simply the better team. The finished the regular season undefeated and won the section title outright tonight.
