Desert Edge beats Cesar Chavez 35-16 to advance in D3 state playoffs


This game was a battle until the end but it didn't start that way. After forcing a punt, Desert Edge took all of one play to get on the board. QB Tehran Thomas raced 60 yards for a score and gave the Scorpions the early 7-0 lead.

The two teams exchnaged turnovers and punts for much of the remainder of the 1st half, until Chavez RB Pavone Meyers was able to break free for a 56 yard score. Two point play was good. 8-7 Chavez.

Desert Edge got into scoring position but Tavion Allen intercepted Thomas with under a minute to play in the half.

Chavez then put the ball on the ground and Edge recovered in scoring position with 32 seconds to play. Thomas then found Roshaun Johnson in the endzone on a 15 yard passing play. Two point try was good, Desert Edge took a 15-8 lead into half time.

The Scorpions put together a 6 minute drive to open the 3rd quarter, smashing the ball with Johnson. The junior RB scored from 5 yards out to put DE up 22-8.

Like the 1st, the two teams traded punts and turnovers for much of the remainder of the game.

With 6 minutes left to play, Thomas scored for Desert Edge on 3rd down and gave them a 28-8 lead.

Another Chavez turnover lead to Desert Edge points; DT Dante Blissit recovered a Chavez fumble and rumbled in for a score. 35-8.

Chavez got a late score for Da'Jon Griffin and receovered an onside kick but Scorpion DB Treyvon Williams intercepted a pass to end the game.

This was a tough, hard-mosed football game. Each team had the fair share of turnovers and penalties but none were bigger than the fumble at the end of the 1st half that would give Desert Edge the lead back.
