Desert Edge wins a thriller over Paradise Valley for first ever state title

Breakdown

These two teams waited until the second half to get the fireworks going, but once they did, this turned into one very exciting game.

Paradise Valley scored the only points of the first half on a Daniel Bridge-Gadd run but these two teams combined for five touchdowns in the third quarter alone.

On Desert Edge's first drive of the second half, the Scorpions faced 4th and 3. Tehran Thomas hit Roshaun Johnson on a quick pass and Johnson rumbled 36 yards for a score. PAT was no good. 7-6.

Bridge-Gadd hit his go to guy, Jacob Brown, for a big gain, putting the ball at the 1 yard line. Bridge-Gadd added his second score of the game. 14-6 Trojans.

After going scorelss on their three drives of the first half, Desert Edge scored on their first two drives of the second. This time Thomas raced in for a score. Two point play was good from RB Alex Medrano. Game tied at 14.

The Scorpion defense came up with a stop and PV's attempt at a fake punt fell short. Desert Edge got the ball at the PV 27 and went right back to Thomas. The junior QB had 4 runs, moving the ball to the 4 yard line. Medrano punched it in to give DE their first lead of the game. PAT again was no good, 20-14 Desert Edge.

PV remained calm and responded. Bridge-Gadd hit Brown and then Jim Dragon on consecutive passes to move the ball to the 15 yard line. Bridge-Gadd hit Jim Delaney from 7 yards out to give the Trojans the lead back 21-20 headed into the 4th.

The teams traded the lead three more times in the fourth quarter.

Desert Edge followed with a Thomas TD run. PAT was no good. 29-27.

Paradise Valley got the ball back with 1:32 left in the game at the 24 yard line. Bridge-Gadd hit Aron Smith for a 17 yard gain, then Brown for another 1st down. He then scrambled to the 27 yard line and found Smith for another 10 yard gain.

On 3rd down, with no timeouts left, Bridge-Gadd was sacked by Dante Blissit, his fifth of the game, forcing the field goal unit to rush on to the field to attempt a long field goal. The kick was wide left.

Final: Desert Edge 29 Paradise Valley 27

Bottomline

This was a great game that could have gone either way. These were my top two teams in my preseason polls (DE #1, PV #2) and the season played out that way.
