Saguaro beats Marcos 38-20 to win D2 state title

Breakdown

Marcos got on the board first, after stopping Saguaro on 4th and short and then converting on a 4th and 1 of their own, RB Shaun Richards carried the rock inside the 10. Junior QB Naz Greer hit Marcus Naisant and Padres took a 7-0 lead.

Saguaro answered two possessions later on a Kare Lyles to Byron Murphy 64 yard TD bomb. PAT was no good. 7-6 Marcos after 1.

Saguaro found their groove in the second quarter, marching the field 6-7 yards a pop and capped the drive on a Stone Matthews TD run. Two point play was no good, 12-7 Saguaro.

The teams exchanged punts and Marcos got to big runs out of Avery Sanders to move the ball across midfield. Richards struck again on a big gain, this one a 45 yard TD run to give the Padres the lead back 14-12.

Saguaro took the lead back for good, when Lyles and Murphy hooked up again just before the half. Two point play failed again and Saguaro took an 18-14 lead into the half.

Senior WR Julian Carter got the Sabercats on the board first in the second scoring on a 38 yard pass from Lyles. 25-14.

Marcos stayed within reach, scoring on a Zyayre Moss run at the end of the 3rd quarter.

With the score 25-20 in the 4th, Saguaro got two scores to seal the victory. Lyles hit junior TE Jared Poplawski for his fourth TD pass of the game and RB Stone Matthews capped off a brilliant game with his second score.

Bottomline

Give Marcos credit, I'm not sure many people gave them a shot to be in this game and they played their hearts out. In the end, a bigger Saguaro team was able to lean on them and score 13 unanswered points in the 4th quarter.
