Tempe beats Estrella Foothills 36-24 in a game filled with turnovers

Typical of early season games. This one was filled with penalties and turnovers.

After exchanging punts, Estrella Foothills looked to take an early lead on an a 28 yard TD run but it was called back on a penalty. The Wolves attempted a field goal but it was blocked. Tempe could not take advantage, throwing a pick six and then a had an interception returned to the six yard line. Travis Haymore punched it in for the Wolves and had EF up 14-0.

Tempe struck quickly, scoring on the first play of their next drive. QB Nathan Clayton hit Javier Valenzuela on a 65 yard bomb to narrow EF's lead to 14-7.

Then the turnover bug hit the Wolves. Tempe intercepted a pass but could capitalize, then blocked a punt and scooped and scored. But this TD was called back for a block in the back and the Buffaloes settled for a Jonathan Ibarra field goal. 14-10 Estrella midway through the second.

A third turnover by the Wolves, a fumble that gave Tempe the ball inside the 10, led to Tempe's first lead of the game. RB Donnell Card scored his first TD of the game and Tempe led 16-14 at the half.

It didn't get any prettier in the second half as the teams combined for five turnovers in the 3rd quarter.

Tempe's DeAndre Hughes recovered a fumble and Card extended the Tempe lead to 23-14 on his second TD of the night. 23-14.

Estrella stayed in the game on a 90 yard J.C. Stanley kickoff return for a score. 23-21.

The Wolves then gained the lead back, intercepting Clayton and kicking a field goal to go up 24-23 in the 4th.

But that lead wouldn't last long, Card raced 57 yards for a score and put Tempe up for good.

Clayton would hit Camari Mitchell on a late TD for Tempe to ice the cake.

Final: Tempe 36 Estrella Foothills 24

Both teams need to clean up the turnovers if they plan to have success in the 2016 season.
