Star QB Ryan Kelley came out and handed the ball off two times before leaving the game for Basha, that didn't matter as back-up Collin Collins stepped in admirably and led the Basha Bears to their first win of the 2016 season, 48-28 over Desert Mountain.
Collins looked like a seasoned pro, jumping right in and leading the Beard down the field on their first drive of the night. He had two first down runs and a 1st down throw to senior Terrell Brown. RB Deseasn Goodman punched the ball in and Basha led 7-0 after the 1st quarter.
After blocking a Basha field goal, it took Desert Mountain a matter of minutes to tie the game up. Austin Nuessle hit Nick Hill for a 48 yard gain and then found Kade Warner on a 42 yard scoring pass on the next play. 7-7.
Basha answered with some trickery. WR Terrell Brown threw a pass to Ty Stifferman for a big gain and then Collins hit Jaylyn Goodman in the flats and he juked several defenders out of their shorts on the 34 yard TD reception. 14-7.
Desert Mountain went to the quick passing game. Nuessle hit Warner, Hill and Brett Teller multiple times on an 11 play drive that tied the score at 14.
Basha drove again but three straight sacks by the Desert Mountain defense gave the Wolves the ball back with 1:30 to play before the half ended. A three-and-out took just 30 seconds off the clock and Basha was able to add a score before the half ended.
With the ball at midfield, Collins hit his brother, Connor Collins for 20 yards, then ran for 10 more before hitting Brown on a 14 yard scoring pass. Basha went up 21-14 at the half.
The teams traded scores to start the second half, Desert Mountain getting a TD run from Hill while Basha scored on the ground with Goodman. 28-21.
Basha went up two scores after their defense came up with a stop and Goodman scored his third TD of the night to put Basha up 35-21 headed into the fourth quarter.
Desert Mountain got back within seven when Nick Hill scored again. 35-28.
Basha's offense benefited from a huge KO return from Jaylyn Goodman and scored again on a Collins to Stifferman TD pass. 41-28.
Basha's defense was able to stop Desert Mountain on consecutive possessions in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Bears.
They forced a punt and the offense scored again on a Jett Campbell run. 48-28. Then Ethan Defrance intercepted Nuessle to cap things off for Basha.
Final: Basha 48 Desert Mountain 28
Desert Mountain kept things interesting for three quarters but in the end, Basha had more horses in the trenches and used a strong ground game to get after it up front.
Sophomore QB Collin Collins stepped in for an injured Ryan Kelley and looked great, he threw 3 TD passes and was over 300 yards of total offense.
This is the first time I have seen Basha run the rock this well in years. Senior RB Desean Goodman rushed for almost 200 yards and scored three TDs.
