Williams Field faced an undefeated Campo Verde team tonight and had probably their biggest test thus far in the 2016 season. The Black Hawks came away proving that they belong in the hunt for the 5A state title, winning 43-14.
The Williams Field defense forced Campo Verde's offense to punt on their first three possessions and the offense responded with 10 early points. Alabama committed kicker Brandon Ruiz hit his first of five field goals on the night and sophomore QB Zack Shepherd hit Max Fine on a 23 yard TD pass to put WF up 10-0 in the second quarter.
The defense came up huge again, forcing consecutive turnovers on Campo drives and they turned those into 10 more points. It was Ruiz again and another Shepherd to Fine TD pass. 20-0.
Campo Verde got on the board late in the 2nd quarter on an E.J. Galvez to Riley Langton TD pass that cut the lead to 20-7 and gave Campo some life.
But with a minute to go in the half, Williams Field added to their lead on a Shepherd to Justis Stokes TD pass. Shepherd hooked up with Fine for a 31 yard gain on the drive as well as with Stokes to move the chains.
27-7 at the half.
Williams Field scored 13 points in the third quarter to blow the doors off this one. Ruiz hit two more field goals while senior DB Tre Bugg picked Galvez and returned it for a score.
Ruiz would add a fifth field goal in the 4th quarter while Campo got a TD from Trevor Crowe.
Final: Williams Filed 43 Campo Verde 14
Do be fooled, this is a solid Campo Verde team but this Williams Field team has the talent to make a serious run at a state title. They have a big, young offensive line, a quality back in Josh Alexander, skill guys in Max Fine and Justis Stokes, a salty defense, a nice young QB and the best kicking game in the state.
Kicker Brandon Ruiz was perfect on the night. He went 5 for 5 on FGs, 5 for 5 on PATs and every KO was a touchback.
Sophomore QB Zack Shepherd threw 3 TD passes.
