I'm not sure anyone expected this game to go this way. It turned into a defensive battle with Verrado coming out on top over Desert Edge in a double overtime thriller.
Desert Edge scored first, kicking a field goal in the first quarter, but that would surprisingly be the only points they would score all night.
Verrado kicked a field goal at the end of the 2nd quarter to knot it up at 3 at halftime.
That would remain the score through regulation. Although both teams had chances to score but came away empty handed.
Desert Edge had the ball, 4th and 1 at the 1 yard line in the 3rd quarter but got turned away.
Verrado moved the ball into Desert Edge territory with 3 minutes to go in the game but a host of Scorpions sacked QB Maverick Gamez to force a punt.
In the first overtime, Verrado got the ball first, made it to the 1 yard line and opted to go for the TD. They were turned away and it looked like Desert Edge would claim a victory.
On 4th down from the 3 yard line, Desert Edge lined up for a FG but Verrado's Ruben Lebron blocked the kick to send the game into double OT.
Desert Edge got the ball first. They gained 4 yards on the first play but zero on 2nd, 3rd and 4th downs.
Verrado elected to kick a FG on their first play of double OT and Jose Gonzales nailed it, giving Verrado a 6-3 win. It was their first win ever over Desert Edge.
Verrado was fighting for their lives and it showed. They needed a win to get into the playoffs, they got it and likely will move up from the #17 spot and continue their season.
Verrado kicker Jose Gonzales was responsible for every point for the Vipers, including the game winner in 2OT.
