From the get-go, you knew what kind of game this was going to be. Centennial's defense came out and had two sacks and a TFL in the first series, and you knew it was going to be a defensive battle.
In fact, other than an 83 yard TD run by Centennial junior RB Zidane Thomas in the 1st quarter, the 1st half was filled with punts, eight in total between the two teams.
Centennial held the 7-0 lead at half time but had chances to score in the first half but came away with zero points. The Coyotes missed a field goal and were stuffed on 4th and 1 at the Desert Edge 1 yard line.
The 3rd quarter was much of the same, four punts and a turnover on downs.
In the 4th, Centennial caught a break, recovering a Desert Edge fumble at the 40 yard line. It took one play for Centennial to extend the lead to 14-0 after Thomas raced in for the score.
After the Coyote D forced another turnover on downs, Thomas was quick to score again, running 27 yards for his third score on the first play of that drive.
Desert Edge was able to get on the board with 4 minutes to go on a short Tehran Thomas TD run set up by a fumble recovery by Daniel Pullem, but it was too little too late.
Final: Centennial 21 Desert Edge 6
Centennial advances to the 5A semi-finals next week. They face #1 seed Cienega, the game will be at Tucson HS.
Centennial's defense was spectacular! They also played field position all night, Desert Edge consistently started with the ball inside their own 20 yard line, several times inside the 5.
I mentioned Centennial's defense, also give credit to RB Zidane Thomas for his three TD runs.
